We are recruiting a post-doctoral scholar who will play a key role enabling community-based and societal relevant research activities in the multi-institutional NSF-sponsored project "Leading Inclusive Transformation in the Geoscience Community via an Intercultural Network of Learning Ecosystems - LIT GEO".

LIT GEO is focused on creating positive change in the Geoscience community by broadening the participation of all people, conducting community-based, society relevant geoscience research in learning ecosystems with community organizations, creating institutional change, and funding diverse students and post-docs in bridge programs. The LIT GEO project is a collaboration network between East Carolina University, North Carolina Central University, and the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo. Faculty, post-baccalaureate and MS students, and post-doctoral scholars from the three institutions, a project coordinator, and community organization leaders and members work together. Successful candidates will be expected to participate in fully funded travel between and within NC and Puerto Rico during the program.

The post-doctoral scholar, based at East Carolina University, College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Earth, Environment, and Planning, will have the opportunity to: receive training, mentorship, and professional development; participate in intercultural summits; collaborate with post-baccalaureate (PB), Master's (MS) students, and postdoctoral (PD) scholars from the network; mentor PB and MS participants; conduct data analysis and present results at conferences. Stipends are competitive. Successful candidates will be expected to participate in fully funded travel between and within NC and Puerto Rico during the program. The position can be extended for a total of 4 years.

Responsibilities include managing aspects of the LIT GEO Project as directed by the team leadership including community engagement, community outreach, educational program development, event coordination, mentoring students, and research tasks contributing toward scholarly productivity and peer-review publications.

The PD scholar based at ECU will also work alongside a post-doctoral scholar and faculty based at NCCU as well as the University of Puerto Rico Arecibo to coordinate program activities, supervise and mentor participant research, and organize and participate in Summits in NC and Puerto Rico.

The PD scholar will be responsible for independent and collaborative development, implementation, and analysis of scientific disciplinary research in Geoscience. The scholar will be encouraged to pursue independent scientific research in any Geoscience field for which appropriate faculty mentorship and resources are available at ECU and/or via collaborators.

The PD scholar will be expected to receive training and undergo exchange visits and enrichment activities with other network universities. They may also participate in teaching experiences to help prepare them for their future career.

Eligibility Requirements. Applicants must have:

• A PhD degree in Geoscience, Geology, Earth Science, Environmental Science, Earth and Planetary Science, Geophysics, or a closely related field at the start of the PD program

• Interest and/or experience working well with people of all backgrounds.
  
  

Preferred Experience: Applicants must be interested in or have experience with societal-relevant and/or community-based geoscience research, community outreach, community engagement, geoscience education, geoscience outreach, environmental geoscience, water quality, water, soil, and water contamination and other society relevant Geoscience areas. Interest or experience with educational program development and/or assessment is considered a plus. Proficiency in Spanish will be beneficial.
