The American Cleaning Institute (ACI), is the Home of the U.S. Cleaning Products Industry®, representing producers of household, industrial, and institutional cleaning products, their ingredients and finished packaging; oleochemical producers; and chemical distributors to the cleaning product industry.
Role Description
This is a full-time hybrid role for a Director, Environmental Health and Safety at ACI in Washington, DC. The Director has a critical role in managing environmental health and safety issues of interest to ACI members and stakeholders. The Director is responsible for developing and managing projects that address chemistries used in the cleaning products supply chain, such as polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) and polymers, to ensure ACI's positions are scientifically and technically sound. This position manages committees, task forces, and working groups, and interfaces with state-level regulatory agencies, federal agencies such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and other stakeholder groups. This position also collaborates with members to oversee and design scientific studies.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills& Abilities:
- Graduate degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, chemistry or chemical engineering, or another related field.
- At least 10 years' experience managing projects, programs, and committees.
- Strong oral and written communications skills; capable of communicating scientific information clearly to a wide range of internal and external audiences, including non-scientific stakeholders and strong presentation skills are a must.
- Experience in chemistry, polymer chemistry, and/or chemical engineering preferred.
- Demonstrated experience working with regulatory agencies (e.g., EPA) on technical issues.
- In depth knowledge of human and environmental risk assessment processes and approaches.
- Ability to work cooperatively with industry and non-industry technical experts, government authorities, and public interest groups.
- Strong consensus-building and negotiating ability.
Major Responsibilities:
- Develop, direct, and implement action plans for science-based policy initiatives involving environment and health-related programs and projects.
- Provide advice and leadership on environmental health and safety issues impacting the ACI members.
- Build and cultivate relationships with industry member groups and regulatory agency staff, including agency senior leadership as appropriate.
- Prepare or assist in preparing ACI positions, policies, briefings and technical evaluations addressing environmental health and safety issues.
- Monitor, assess, and interpret scientific literature and other sources of data related to environmental health and safety.
- Act as the industry representative for contracted research studies, assisting with study design, planning, analyzing and disseminating results.
- Develop tools for assessing the environmental occurrence and environmental impacts of cleaning product ingredients.
- Provide technical advice and expertise on current environment and health safety issues impacting the cleaning products industry to ACI members promptly.
- Develop strategies for addressing emerging environmental health and safety issues.
- Provide technical expertise on environmental-related issues for ACI activities as appropriate to ACI committees, professional organizations, academia, public interest groups, media, and governmental agencies.
- Develop and manage research projects and contracts for ACI committees related to activities of ACI concern.
- Provides technical leadership, meeting facilitation management, communication and administrative support for ACI committees, work groups and task forces.
