Position description

The Marsden Lab at The University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine, Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, seeks a Junior Specialist to work in research involving HIV persistence and pathogenesis. The lab uses cell/tissue culture systems, molecular analysis, and humanized mouse models to study HIV infection and test novel strategies to cure the infection.

The Junior specialist will work with the PI and other lab members to advance ongoing HIV cure research projects. This will include learning and performing mouse surgeries to create humanized mice, performing HIV infections and other mouse procedures as needed, and conducting tissue culture experiments. Specific assays to be performed will include flow cytometry, PCR, molecular cloning, and plasmid transfections. The individual will also assist with general lab maintenance.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

1) Bachelor's degree in biology, biochemistry, microbiology, or related field.

2) Willingness to work with the following:

* HIV

* Laboratory mice: including husbandry, injections, surgical procedures, tissue harvesting

* Human fetal tissue

3) Skilled in following laboratory safety and experimental protocols.

4) Skilled in using general laboratory equipment such as pipettes, centrifuges, etc.

5) Willingness to occasionally work outside of regular work hours and/or weekends.

6) Ability to maintain accurate and timely records of experiments and equipment.
