Embrace this leadership role to serve as the senior level planner responsible for planning and managing shrubsteppe recovery projects, focused on the southern counties of Region 3.

This is an opportunity to accomplish restoration through understanding and translating habitat and wildlife models to basin-specific restoration.

We are seeking a candidate to provide technical and policy support for planning, implementing, and assessing restoration approaches and best practices for the agency at both statewide and regional levels.

 

What to Expect-

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, this position will,

Lead internal and external coordination, facilitate support, and seek funding to aid others in developing habitat restoration and enhancement opportunities.

  • Actively engages state and federal agencies, co-managers, and partners in restoration planning, including the area tribes. Participates in collaborative steering committee meetings. Actively collaborates with each entity to help them achieve supported shrubsteppe recovery goals, and on a larger scale generating and facilitating basin level discussions and efforts. 
  • Serve as ongoing member of WSSRI Advisory Committee. Inform WSRRI steering committee on approaches/strategies for landscape and site-scale restoration. Inform, as requested, development of WSRRI 3-year work plans and regular strategy reviews. 
  • Assist project partners in designing and executing shrubsteppe restoration projects. Shape, build out, and implement coordinated restoration resource and service delivery. Oversee delivery of services and implementation of habitat restoration actions and evaluate success of program. 
  • Understanding how habitat science and models inform restoration priorities, seeks habitat project opportunities using collaborative partnerships and community involvement.

Develops fundable restoration project proposals and manages planning, design, and/or implementation of restoration projects.

  • Develop proposals for new and/or expanded projects that meet highest habitat need and recovery objectives of tribal and regional recovery plans (e.g. WSRRI) and other related actions and initiatives lead by the agency.
  • Working with the Wildlife Program, tribal co-managers, Conservation Districts, State Parks, DNR, and other collaborators, assemble habitat data to inform the development of goals, objectives, and actions for advancement of restoration projects.
  • Identify land ownership and potential project constraints or risks, and options for resolution of these issues. 
  • Coordinate with regional habitat, fish and wildlife biologists, private lands biologists, land managers, and engineers, prepare recommendations for WDFW Regional Management Team consideration of project proposals, and brief staff on status of restoration project implementation.

Develop and manage grants and effective and efficient budgets.

  • Work with supervisor and program budget managers to develop fiscally responsible proposals and scopes of work.
  • Professionally engage WDFW contract and budget management support staff to ensure timely and accurate data reflect management actions.
  • Work with fiscal team and CAMP to develop receivable contracts with restoration partners for restoration work.
  • Develop and manage payable subcontracts to implement restoration projects.

 

Working Conditions:

Work setting:  Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.

Travel requirements:  Travel up to 15% of the time. Periodic Statewide or regional travel and occasional attendance at evening meetings required. May include extended travel and evening or overnight trips.

 

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

One (1) year of experience as an Environmental Planner 3.

Or

A Bachelor of Science degree in fish or wildlife biology/management, environmental planning/science, or closely related field.

And

Three (3) years of professional experience in environmental or natural resource management, planning, or program development.

 

A Master’s in the applicable science will substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.

A Doctorate degree in the applicable science will substitute for two (2) years of required experience.

Closely related qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-by-year basis.

 

License:  Valid driver’s license.


Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess some or all the following:

A Master's degree with major emphasis in land use, urban, regional, environmental, or natural resource planning, landscape architecture, geography, land use or environmental law, public administration with an environmental emphasis, or closely related field.

And 

Four (4) years of professional experience in land use, urban, regional, environmental, or natural resource planning, and/or program development.

Technical Competencies:

  • Applied fish and wildlife management techniques.
  • General ecological principles and practices.
  • Conservation and restoration biology.
  • Environmental engineering principles.
  • Working knowledge of freshwater ecosystems.
  • Human influences to aquatic ecosystems.

Regulatory/Policy:

  • Environmental regulations, including SEPA, HPA, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, Growth Management Act, and Shoreline Management Act.
