Job Overview:

APTIM, a leading engineering firm with a global presence and a thriving Coastal Resilience practice, is pleased to announce an immediate opening for a Senior Resilience Specialist for government clients in California. This position is intended to play an important role in expanding APTIM's climate change mitigation and adaptation service offerings and to support ongoing city and regional planning, benefits assessment and project design for energy, flood, infrastructure, and natural systems resilience. The APTIM team is multidisciplinary offering community resilience program management, infrastructure engineering, energy efficiency program management, disaster recovery, and coastal restoration services. APTIM work with both government and private clients on a wide range of urban, environmental, and coastal issues.

APTIM is seeking a motivated, energetic, and personable engineer with experience in vulnerability and risk assessments, complex data analysis and visualization, resilience planning, technical or grant writing, climate scenario analysis, and managing local, state and federal resilience projects. Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:
  • Provide subject matter expertise on sea level rise, hazards and coastal risks, coastal hydrodynamics, climate change and engineering and construction of coastal or flood control projects.
  • Independently conduct coastal, future conditions (climate change) and resilience analyses and apply visualization and climate scenario tools for project evaluation and capital improvement plan and implementation plan development.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret data from maps, tools and models.
  • Develop maps and querying geographic informational systems.
  • Develop resilient infrastructure grant applications.
  • Evaluate innovative adaptation strategies and risk reduction strategies.
  • Write technical reports and research papers.
  • Develop cost estimates for adaptation and evaluate return on investment of infrastructure investments.
  • Identify and participate in networks focused on innovating climate mitigation projects.
  • Participate in business development activities and write proposals to expand practice in California.
  • Present at client meetings and conferences.
  • Interpret contract documents and perform contract administration.
  • Collaborate with market leads to ensure organization capacity is in place to deliver project deliverables in California.
  • Manage individual tasks and small projects while also working collaboratively as part of a team for larger or multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Independently manage multiple project schedules and deliverables.
  • Professionally communicate with clients.
  • Supervise staff or interns.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Resilience planning and hazard mitigation experience (2-7 years minimum) required with focus in sea level rise, flooding, extreme wind and heat.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Structural, Civil, Coastal or Environmental Engineering, Physics, Environmental Science, Computer Engineering or relevant area of study required.
  • Experience in writing vulnerability assessments and geospatial analysis of critical assets at risk to flooding.
  • Experience working with local, state and federal government agencies with resilience or climate change mitigation related responsibilities.
  • Experience in design and construction management of waterfront construction and redevelopment projects.
  • Working knowledge of utility infrastructure and its vulnerabilities in coastal environments.
  • Working knowledge of climate scenario tools and climate change projections.
  • Working knowledge of climate adaptation and flood mitigation strategies.
  • Working knowledge of mapping tools, GIS, Power BI, and Excel.
  • Demonstrated technical and analytical skills in community and infrastructure planning.
  • Demonstrated strength in written and verbal communication skills suitable to a consulting environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to fluently communicate in spoken and written English.
  • Civil engineering skills such as stormwater management, flood control, transportation, floodproofing, and coastal infrastructure design capabilities are preferred.
  • Experience with application of Envision, LEED, Climate Disclosure Project, ICLEI or WEDG framework, checklists and guidance or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience with preparation of proposals, selection presentations and business development preferred.
  • Have a passion for working in a consulting firm environment on various types of projects.
  • Willingness to travel in support of business and project activities.
  • Preferred office location is Irvine, California or San Diego, California.
