JOB SUMMARY
The University of Connecticut is seeking an experienced histotechnologist for the Histology Laboratory within the Connecticut Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (CVMDL), a part of the Department of Pathobiology and Veterinary Science in the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources. The Connecticut Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory provides top-quality diagnostic services to our clients, who are comprised of veterinarians, members of the agricultural industry, owners of companion, zoo, and aquatic animals, stewards of Connecticut wildlife, and residents of Connecticut, New England, and beyond. Through their work, they strive to work cooperatively with federal and state veterinary agencies to enhance disease surveillance and response in an appropriate and effective manner
The Histology Technician II is responsible for receiving, processing, and preparing animal tissue specimens sent to CVMDL for histopathological analysis. The histotechnologist receives specimens from external clients and prepares the received tissues for the requested histopathological analysis. Tissue specimens are sorted, logged, and prioritized according to the difficulty of the procedures required. Preparation of tissues includes trimming tissues as required for further testing; embedding tissues in paraffin; mounting of tissues; and immunohistochemical staining of tissues, to prepare the specimen for histopathological analysis by the CVMDL pathologist.
The histotechnologist is responsible for the preparation of any stains, reagents, or other chemical agents required to conduct the preparation of the tissue. They are responsible for the maintenance of all tissue, block, and slide quality control specimens for CVMDL, as required by the laboratory, university, and industry standards, and have the authority to adjust established procedures. Additionally, the histotechnologist is expected to autonomously research, enact, and modify any existing laboratory procedures, in accordance with shifting industry standards, with limited supervision. The histotechnologist is also expected to stay abreast of local, state, and federal law, as well as remain aware of disease trends in the areas served.
The work performed by the histotechnologist directly impacts the ability of the CVMDL pathologist to correctly diagnose and recommend effective solutions and/or courses of treatments to external clients, dependent on the laboratory's accuracy.
