Job Duties
The Invasive Species Coordinator will lead the Virginia Department of Forestry's invasive species initiatives to mitigate the impact of invasive plants, pests, and pathogens in support of the objectives outlined in the Virginia Invasive Species Management Plan. This position will report to the DOF Forest Health Program Manager and be responsible for coordinating work to eradicate or slow the spread of priority invasive species on private and public lands. Duties of the Invasive Species Coordinator include: provide leadership in the implementation of Virginia's Invasive Species Management Plan; statewide coordination of invasive species management working with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS), the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), and the Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR), in collaboration with relevant stakeholders; lead various invasive species survey and mapping efforts; represent DOF on state invasive species committees and work groups; support Virginia PRISMs (Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management); provide management and guidance to DOF's Invasive Species Specialists; manage budgets and compile grant reports; and implement new invasive species initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications
-Coursework in Forestry, Urban Forestry, Natural Resource Management, Ecology, Environmental Science, Entomology, Plant Pathology, Weed Science, or a related field
-Extensive knowledge of invasive species ecology and management
-Ability to identify common invasive plants, pests, and pathogens in Virginia
-Demonstrated ability to develop and manage programs and initiatives
-Ability to communicate effectively orally in the English language both in person and on the telephone. Ability in public speaking before audiences of all sizes
-Ability to work and engage with a wide variety of existing and new partners, groups, agencies, and organizations.
-Ability to communicate effectively in writing and to prepare technical reports and grant proposals.
-Demonstrated skills with computers, Microsoft Office suite including email, Word, Excel
-Experience with ArcGIS mapping programs
-Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods; bend, stoop, and reach to file, sort literature, etc.; and work with interruptions.
-Ability to walk on foot across different types of forested and rough terrain.
