Tennessee Aquarium
Horticulturist II
At the Tennessee Aquarium, our mission is to connect people with nature and empower them to make informed decisions about water and wildlife. The Horticulturist II position is responsible for developing and implementing the horticultural aspects of exhibits throughout the Tennessee Aquarium. They will work in close collaboration with the Senior Horticulturist, Horticulture volunteers, and Forestry staff.
Key Responsibilities
* Carry out daily care of exhibit plants including watering, leaf cleaning, fertilization, pest management, pruning, soil care, improvement, and installation/removal of plants.
* Develop and maintain propagation and off-exhibit plant holding areas in greenhouse environment through activities such as starting cuttings and seeds, preparing plants for exhibit installation, and designing and maintaining propagation/greenhouse equipment.
* Help with daily direction of horticulture volunteers and interns.
* Keep abreast with current literature related to area of responsibility. Maintain appropriate records and submit reports as necessary.
* Assist in identifying and acquiring plants from suppliers and plan and implement field collecting.
* Assist Curator in research, design, and development of horticulture components of new exhibits and modification of existing exhibits.
* Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment used in area of responsibility.
* Participate in cross-functional activities like conducting tours, educational programs, etc., for public, members, media, education staff, docents, etc.
* Participate as needed in inter-departmental committees such as safety, Riverwatch, homepage, events, etc.
Key Requirements
* Bachelor's degree in horticulture, botany or related science; or the equivalent of a degree in experience
* Previous experience in a zoological setting, arboretum, greenhouse or related field
* Proven knowledge and experience with the practices and principles of horticulture in a botanical garden setting.
* Knowledge of and skills in all aspects of plant culture including watering, fertilization, pruning, pest control, and plant propagation.
* Interest and ability to learn about the flora and fauna of the Southeastern U.S.
* Good communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work in collaboration with other staff.
* Valid driver's license (Required for occasional work-related travel)
Full-time, hourly ($18.35/hour)
