Job Description and Duties

Per CCR 249.3, this job control may be used to fill subsequent vacancies.

Under general supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist Supervisor in Plant Pathology, the Agricultural Technician II as a program specialist performs a wide variety of nonprofessional laboratory and greenhouse tasks independently of a more difficult, varied, and responsible nature in the processing of plant pest specimens, data collection, entry and maintenance of various lab databases in a laboratory and greenhouse setting. The duties include, but are not limited to:

* Process and prepare plant samples for laboratory analysis: prepare chemical solutions; collect and macerate plant tissue; prepare, load, and process ELISA plates; extract DNA; provide general molecular lab assistance; prepare sterile culture media; culture microorganisms using sterile techniques; plant seed and maintain seedlings/plants under laboratory growth chamber and greenhouse conditions.
* Heat-sterilize utensils, liquids, and sample/laboratory waste using a high-pressure autoclave. Wash laboratory utensils and equipment. Clean laboratory work areas, greenhouse benches, and growth chambers. Calibrate laboratory equipment.
* Enter, edit, retrieve, and maintain laboratory testing data using data management software.
* Copy and organize taxonomic literature files. Catalog and file reprints, scientific journals, and books in the library. Conduct literature searches to gather needed information via library, internet, and other appropriate sources. Maintain inventories of laboratory supplies and equipment. Answer and direct telephone calls, refer technical and scientific questions to appropriate scientist or laboratory.
* Entry of data from the Pest and Damage Record (PDR) forms into the official PDR Database. Data entered may include initial entry data, or only final determination data, or a combination, depending on the program. Incumbent will be trained thoroughly in the intricacies of the data entry.
* Aid, when needed with answering and directing telephone calls, refer technical and scientific questions to appropriate scientist or laboratory.
* Aid with processing incoming/outgoing mail and interoffice messenger mail to ensure timely and accurate distribution of all plant/insect samples to the appropriate Laboratory for testing.

Working Conditions

Work is accomplished mainly in 3-4 laboratories within the Plant Pathology Section. Incumbents are required to wear disposable gloves up to eight (8) hours per day when handling plant tissue samples. The labs are equipped with standard processing facilities and specialized equipment. Safety features include emergency showers, eyewashes, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits in every room. The laboratory also houses a multi-room DNA laboratory, an electron microscopy suite (SEM and TEM), a macrophotography station, and a literature reference library. The Plant Pest Diagnostic Center (PPDC) houses four other scientific laboratories (Botany, Nematology, Entomology, and Seed Botany).

The Plant Pest Diagnostic Center is located near public light rail transportation and offers free parking.
