Position Title Veterinary Assistant Job Type Staff Position Information
The Office of Extension invites applications for an exempt, full-time, contractual position with limited benefits. The Veterinary Assistant will report the UMES Veterinarian. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
The successful candidate will work under the under the direction/supervision of the UMES Veterinarian, the duties and health maintenance functions dealing with the demonstration sheep and goats at the UMES Small Ruminant Farm. The position involves the effective management of animal husbandry; preventative medicine (including quarantine, animal biosecurity and surveillance); clinical disease, disability or related health issues; protocol-associated disease, disability and other sequelae; surgery and preoperative care; pain and distress; anesthesia and analgesia; and humane euthanasia.
Responsibilities
* Performs routine and specialized duties associated with animal care, including feeding, bedding, medicating, cleaning, restraint and transportation of sheep and goats.
* Adheres to all local, state, federal and University regulations, guidelines and policies.
* Assists with maintaining and sanitizing animal facilities, ensuring there is adequate inventory of necessary supplies and equipment needed for demonstration and training workshops and animal care in general.
* Observes and reports animal behavior and conditions, collecting and preparing samples.
* Supervises student workers/volunteers and provides technical assistance to academic, extension and research personnel.
* Executes routine health protocols and, under advice of the UMES veterinarian, treat animals accordingly, strictly following medicament withdrawal periods.
* Repairs and services lab equipment as needed so that research and animal care continues successfully.
* The position requires weekend, holiday and after-hour work as needed.
* The successful candidate may be designated as essential personnel during a storm/natural disaster.
* The successful candidate must be able to perform the responsibilities with minimal · instruction and be will be expected to independently perform the duties.
* Performs other related duties as assigned.
Classification 45-0000 Farming, Fishing, and Forestry Occupations Required Qualifications
* Bachelors in Animal Science or animal/agriculture related degree.
* One year experience working in a veterinary practice or animal clinical laboratory
* Experience with either of the following teaching animal species: swine, ovine, caprine or poultry,
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work collaboratively in a diverse workplace.
Preferred Qualifications
* Two years of animal husbandry, related animal care or lab animal research experience
* Veterinary Degree (does not need to be licensed in MD,
* Associate of Arts degree in Veterinary Technology or equivalent college level program (LVT)
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
* Basic knowledge of animal technical skills.
* Ability to identify sick animals and provide medical treatment as prescribed.
* Ability to demonstrate leadership skills/ability.
* Ability to work with livestock species, sheep and goats.
* Ability to follow oral and written instruction.
* Ability to assist in managing and conducting extension demonstrations and research projects.
* Ability to collect, and process samples and research data.
* Ability to use and trouble shoot equipment and must be able to lift 50 pounds.
* Ability to balance multiple projects at a time are expected.
* Ability to perform job duties while wearing respiratory protection may be required.
