The Lilly Diabetes, Obesity and Complications Therapeutic Area (DOCTA) is focused on discovery and development of new therapeutics for the treatment of medical complications arising from type 2 diabetes and obesity. The cardiorenal team is looking for a biologist to conduct experiments using animal models of renal and metabolic diseases. The ideal candidate should be goal-oriented and dedicated, capable of conducting thorough research studies with minimal oversight. This biologist will design and perform experiments independently and within team-based environments, as well as interact with internal and external collaborators.

Key Objectives
  • Perform laboratory tasks, including animal handling, blood, urine and biopsy collection, measurement of body weight, and food intake.
  • Perform test article formulations and administration by oral gavage and parenteral routes, including subcutaneous, intravenous, intraperitoneal, and intramuscular injection.
  • Perform small animal surgical procedures including, but not limited to, rodent catheterization, mini-pump implantation, and various survival surgeries (e.g., unilateral nephrectomy).
  • Perform analysis of the samples collected during the course of the experiments, including blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine measurements, urinary albumin, blood or plasma glucose etc.
  • Perform analysis and interpretation of data from in vivo experiments, including presentation of data in spreadsheet and graphical form with descriptive statistical analysis.
  • Maintain accurate records, conduct data analysis, and report data in written and oral formats.
  • Conduct work in full compliance with Lilly Research Policies and complete all required training activities in the timeframe specified.
  • Demonstrate pro-active and flexible behaviors and develop skills for competency in conducting independent research projects.
Minimum Requirements
  • BS or MS in biology/animal science/veterinary technology or a closely related field
  • Minimum 1 year of laboratory research experience.
Additional Skills/Preferences
  • Significant experience in the handling of small laboratory animals.
  • Experience with rodent disease models, with some knowledge of small animal surgery techniques.
  • Proven ability to work in flexible, team-oriented environment.
  • Flexible as the position is full-time (40 h/week), but not all regularly scheduled work hours will occur Mon-Fri from 8 AM-4:45 PM. There is a requirement to work occasionally early and/or after-hours or on weekends.
  • Arrange, modify and organize methods for in vivo studies and modify procedures when warranted.
  • Set up and run biochemical assays (protein, enzyme assays, etc.), running ex vivo assays and with aspects of protein analysis (SDS-PAGE gels and western blotting).
  • Work with radioisotopes, chemical, and biological hazards.
