Position Summary The Department of Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) seeks outstanding applicants for the position of Director of Microbiology. The primary responsibilities include medical and scientific directorship, technical oversight, test development and validation using cutting-edge clinical laboratory platforms, and maintenance of licensure and accreditation. The Director will apply their expertise in medical microbiology, molecular diagnostics of infectious diseases, and microbiome science to oversee a complex clinical operation that supports the Nebraska Medicine health system and a robust outreach laboratory operation. Opportunities to impact population health through collaborations with the Nebraska Public Health Laboratory, which is housed on campus within the Department of Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology, are available. Additional opportunities include collaboration with infectious diseases and antimicrobial stewardship colleagues in addition to faculty in the Global Center for Health Security and Nebraska Biocontainment Unit. The successful candidate will participate in leadership of professional laboratory staff, lead our accredited fellowship program in Clinical and Public Health Microbiology (ASM CPEP) and direct the laboratory in collaboration with the department chair and other departmental leaders. A track record of academic productivity is favorable, including evidence of scholarly achievements and funding for translational or basic science research projects. Candidates must hold an MD, MD/PhD, or PhD degree. Board certification in CP or AP/CP (for pathologists) or the American Board of Medical Microbiology (for Ph.D. candidates) is required. The successful candidate will contribute to training pathology residents, microbiology fellows, infectious diseases fellows, medical students, and other learners. Salary will be commensurate with experience and will include a competitive benefits package.
The Department of Pathology and Microbiology has over 70 faculty members working in modern, well-equipped laboratories with state-of-the-art facilities, including BSL3 and ABSL3 facilities. UNMC houses multiple core facilities to support novel and high impact research programs, including the Advanced Microscopy Core, the Electron Microscopy Core, the Proteomics Core, the Genomics and Epigenomics Cores, the Biomedical Informatics Core and others.
