The Preclinical Modeling Specialist I is responsible for supporting the preclinical research needs of researchers using transgenic and preclinical mouse models, including patient-derived xenografts, at Fred Hutch. The PCM Specialist will perform a variety of technical procedures including microinjection, embryo transfer, and other basic surgical procedures to support the science of creating and maintaining preclinical mouse models.

Responsibilities Research Support : Following SOPs, perform essential tasks in the development of preclinical mouse models such as tasks related to mouse husbandry and colony management such as setting up breeding pairs, manage breeding rotations and setting up timed pregnancies. Additional research support tasks include managing surgical mouse models. This position is expected to be proficient with basic transgenic mouse techniques such as embryo handling and manipulation, embryo transfer surgeries, and gamete cryopreservation. Research development: Establish and maintain positive, collaborative working relationships with faculty and external users to identify preclinical mouse model needs. Equipment Oversight: Coordinate and complete maintenance on basic equipment used in preclinical modeling core such as microscopes and surgical supplies. Assist in supply management and preparation. Training and Education : Assist in developing team SOPs, and training materials and guidelines for investigator use. Regulatory and Compliance: Assure that all work done is in accordance with an approved protocol. Other duties as assigned including work on weekends, evenings, or holiday shifts as part of a rotation. The PCM Specialist is classified as essential personnel and, as such, is required to work with minimal number of absences and during all Center closures except in the event of a major disaster when access to animal housing and use facilities is prohibited by governmental emergency personnel. REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Required: Bachelor's degree - Field of Education: Science, engineering, zoology, or related field and 1 year of experience with rodent handling and husbandry
- Work Experience can be substituted for education: 2-3+ years of research using murine models, lab bench experience, experience with aseptic surgery or procedures.
REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:
- Preferred: AALAS certification at the LAT or higher level is recommended, and persons hired for this position should continue to pursue this certification as soon as possible once eligible until achieved.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Demonstrated ability to learn and adapt to new systems and techniques;
- Ability to learn and operate all PCM procedural techniques
- Basic understanding of preclinical research using in vivo models;
- Excellent communication skills and organizational skills;
- Ability to work in a collaborative team-oriented environment;
- Experience with MS Office suite of applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Sharepoint, Teams, One Drive, etc);
- Record keeping and database management
- Basic rodent handling and procedural/ surgical skills
- Small animal surgeries using stereomicroscope
