Job Summary:

The Environmental Science Specialist will support senior and legal staff regarding relevant portions of the Clean Water Act. The scientist in this position will add skills and knowledge in implementing the current state program for Arizona's surface waters. Serve as the team lead for proactively developing and updating standards that are scientifically defensible. Provide technical assistance and expertise on water quality standards issues and take responsibility for updating and implementing yearly (or more frequent) reviews of water quality standards and the impaired waters identification rule. We will rely on you to perform complex analysis of environmental data and conduct research or investigation for the purpose of identifying, abating, or eliminating sources of pollutants or hazards that affect either the environment or the health of the population. Coordinate with outside groups for data collection or other activities that help us meet agency objectives. Communicate the results of your work to diverse audiences, including management, stakeholders, the public, and nearby communities.

This position is available for remote work on a full-time basis within Arizona (including virtual office arrangements).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:

• Knowledge of the Clean Water Act; State and Federal environmental regulations (specific Federal regulations include the Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, National Historic Preservation Act, and/or the National Environmental Policy Act); environmental sciences and research; AZ sources of pollution and best practices for preventing the release of pollutants; environmental research, investigation techniques, risk assessment, and statistical analysis

Skills and Abilities:
• Strong communication skills, including technical writing and public speaking
• Wetland specialist experience preferred
• Ability to understand and apply environmental rules and statutes; to manage complex projects involving multiple stakeholders; to follow guidance documents, standard operating procedures, and other technical instructions in the performance of tasks; to prepare clear, concise, and accurate reports; and to summarize completed tasks and/or monitoring data orally and in written communication
• Experience with supervision, mentoring, and leading a team of scientists desired
• Experience with Water quality data collection and analysis

Selective Preference(s):

• Project Management skills and/or certification (CAPM, PMP) desired but not required initially

Pre-Employment Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, toxicology, environmental science, water resources, hydrology, geology, law, or other related subjects.
• 2 years' experience for level 2
• 5 years' experience for level 3 (at level 3 Master's degree can substitute for 2 years of experience and a Doctorate can substitute for 4 years of experience) and an Environmental Professional in Training Certification through the Institute of Institute of Professional Environmental Practice (IPEP.org) or the ability to obtain certification within 1-year of hire.
