As an Research and development (R&D) Applied Scientist Leak Detection, you will utilize state-of-the-art hardware and software to conduct experimental research, drive product innovations, and contribute to the emerging field of Advanced Leak Detection. In this role, you will have proven experimental field work, demonstrate a deep understanding of data analysis and interpretation, and have excellent communication and presentation skills.

Your responsibilities
  • Develop novel solutions to improve the performance and expand the application space of ABB leak detection products
  • Utilize hardware, software, and data analysis skills to develop and test novel methods of finding, quantifying, and grading industrial and environmental gas emissions
  • Design and perform laboratory and field experiments needed to qualify and improve leak detection applications of new and current products
  • Work with academic, national laboratory, industrial, and other research collaborators to apply laser-based leak detection methods to a wide array of environmental, industrial, and military uses
  • Analyze, synthesize, and communicate findings
  • Travel will be required
  • Hold a valid US driver's license
Your background
  • Ph.D. in an applied/experimental field such as Physics, Aeronautics, Engineering, Geosciences, Environmental Sciences, Forestry, Ecology, Biological Sciences, or related data-rich field
  • General working knowledge of fundamental physics (e.g., classical mechanics, electricity and magnetism, electromagnetic radiation, kinematics) and applied mathematics
  • Hands-on laboratory and field experience performing experiments, collecting, analyzing data, and working on projects
  • Proven problem-solving skills to identify and troubleshoot unforeseen problems in a systematic and scientific method
  • Ability to support and collaborate with sales, service, technical customers and collaborators to demonstrate technology, train users, help with data analysis, and plan demo experiments
  • Familiarity with scientific data analysis tools such as: MATLAB, Pro, Origin, LabVIEW, Python, etc.
  • Experience with experiment design, data analysis, deriving information from data, and presenting results
  • Experience with meso-scale simulation of physical systems (wind, fluids, heat, etc.)
  • Ability to motivate and challenge teammates in collaborative environment
  • Analysis of experimental data using multivariate statistics, nonlinear minimization, and numerical solving
  • Scientific coding and data analysis experience in Matlab & Python including, but not limited to, Pandas, Numpy, Matplotlib, Scipy libraries. Familiarity with Linux
  • Excellent knowledge of English (written and spoken)
  • Candidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US
