The Role: Senior Climate Scientist, Physical Impacts Grade (relevant for internal applicants only): 12 The Location: US - Virtual The Team: The Climate Center of Excellence is part of S&P Global's Sustainable1 (S1), the centralized source for essential sustainability intelligence at S&P Global. This position is on the Science team within the Center of Excellence. The Science team provides state-of-the-art science to power S&P Global products and help the world's financial institutions, companies, and governments measure and manage the financial risk from climate change. The Science team is a group of experienced climate scientists who conduct cutting-edge applied research on the physical and economic impacts of climate change. The science team works on forward-looking projects that anticipate emerging needs in climate risk analysis. Meeting this immense challenge requires coupling advanced physical science with advanced economic and financial modeling. The successful applicant will be exposed to new modeling and data methods that will be widely applicable in future projects. Responsibilities: Become a senior member of the science team to develop new model innovations, including event-oriented hazard models and probabilistic techniques addressing correlations among hazards. Develop hazard models for emerging climate impacts, including, for example, tipping-point effects, cascading hazards, and landslides. Evaluate and validate hazard-model results. Lead and/or contribute to technical reports and academic publications. Keep pace with evolving scientific literature in areas relevant to our modeling. Work with the Customer Success team and the Product team to promote technical understanding of current methods and development of enhanced methods. Present research externally to our customers and at scientific conferences Basic Qualifications: 10 years of experience in quantitative analysis of climate-related geophysical phenomena and associated data preferred High standards for data integrity and meticulous attention to detail and consistency. Experience in mentoring of less-senior staff scientists. Well organized and able to manage projects independently with deadlines. Good communicator and able to work successfully in a team environment. Preferred Qualifications: PhD in Climate/Atmospheric Science or a Physical Science with Climate-Science experience, plus 10 years of experience in the field Experience with latest global climate model data sets. Experience in statistical and probabilistic analysis of large geophysical data sets. Strong interest in multi-disciplinary approach to physical climate impacts, as integration of these impacts into socio-economic modeling Strong desire for hands-on approach to research with skills in R, Python, and/or MatLab, as well as familiarity with Unix-based computing environments. Compensation/Benefits Information (US Applicants Only): S&P Global states that the anticipated base salary range for this position is $114,100-$195,800. Base salary ranges may vary by geographic location. In addition to base compensation, this role is eligible for an annual incentive plan.
