Job Description

The Department of Environmental Quality is looking to hire an Environmental Scientist to work in the Air Toxics, Lead and Asbestos Section of the Division of Air Quality. This position may be filled at any of the advertised levels listed below. Salary depends on the job level offered within the series.

Principal Duties
As an Environmental Scientist you will typically:
  • Schedule and conduct inspections and/or investigations at facilities subject to the state and federal asbestos and lead-based paint rules and regulations.
  • Review and determine approval/disapproval of state and federal certification and notification forms.
  • Follow up on inspections to determine compliance and/or appropriate course of action.
  • Review and determine approval/disapproval of training course applications required for accreditation according to state and federal asbestos and lead-based paint rules and regulations.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal person for this position will possess:
  • Experience conducting compliance inspections and enforcing state and federal asbestos and lead-based paint rules and regulations.
  • Experience with technical writing and reading to create inspection memos, enforcement actions, settlement agreements, reviewing technical data, interpreting state and federal asbestos and lead-based paint rules and regulations.
  • Communication skills as this position will be interacting with regulated entities, the public and coordinating with local, state and federal agencies.
  • Experience with the oversight of interaction with Local and State Health Department grant monies.
  • Experience managing and coordinating Environmental Justice Fund program designated for remediation projects in targeted/low-income community.
Job Series
The selected candidate for this position may be brought in as an Environmental Scientist I with a salary range of $23.93 - $35.94 per hour with the potential to move to an Environmental Scientist II with a salary range of $28.16-$42.30 per hour, and then with the potential to move up to an Environmental Scientist III with a salary range of $33.14-$49.79 per hour.

Preferences
Preference may be give to those with a Bachelors degree or higher in the following fields: Environmental Sciences, Chemical, Biological or Physical sciences; OR an equivalent combination of relevant education and paid professional employment directly related to the above tasks.
