As an EH&S specialist you will serve as our subject matter expert on assessing hazards in our company's operations. You'll collaborate with lab and engineering teams to keep safety at the forefront of our teams. You'll ensure that the company is current in our regulatory obligations. Our ideal candidate has experience working in a small company that is growing in terms of number of employees and chemical operations (laboratory, chemical process development, and pilot plant).

Job Details

Brief overview:
we are looking for someone to be the sole EH&S specialist onsite. Responsibilities in job description. Currently we have a contract with someone who helps however we need someone in office full time.
  • Must have EH&S experience with chemicals/working within a lab. Manufacturing operations is a plus
  • Only one in this role, needs to be self-sufficient and can work with autonomy
  • Helps implement things we need to do and also find ways to improve current processes
  • Needs to be flexible with prioritization - as a small company we're constantly changing and evolving

Responsibilities:

  • Partner with Research Operations functional areas to implement methods, programs, controls, and safeguards which promote a safe work environment
  • Lead, support and manage implementation of EHS programs (e.g., lab health and safety, biosafety, ergonomics, hazardous chemicals, laser safety, fire safety, inspections, risk assessments)
  • Perform EHS assessments for new processes, products, and equipment that include risk assessments, confined space, lockout/tagout, ergonomics and machine guarding
  • Chair the site Safety Leadership Team for the company

Lead and manage EHS risk assessments and other key initiatives for the company
  • Promote, reinforce, and sustain a strong safety culture through engagement with site leadership and operational teams
  • Assist in the development and implementation of an EH&S management system
  • Engage and lead onsite Emergency Response Procedures, planning, tabletops, and Operational Excellence activities
  • Develop and deliver training to ensure a safe work environment and regulatory compliance.
  • Investigate hazards, near misses and incidents with the goal of finding root causes and implementing ways to prevent recurrence
  • Partner with lab management team to support a variety of specialty spaces, processes, and tools, and reporting needs
  • Lead in-house emergency response activities (incident command, training, table top and functional drills)
  • Interface with external regulatory agencies on assigned EHS matters
  • Manage interactions with contracted waste disposal services, maintain and set up new waste profiles, ensure proper disposal of all chemical waste, maintain waste records and prepare for regulatory inspections.


POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Skills & Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in an EH&S role in a research based environment
  • Knowledgeable with laboratory and scale-up chemical safety practices
  • Able to drive EH&S in a fast paced, dynamic, cross functional environment


Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with early-stage corporations
  • Knowledgeable of laboratory and/or manufacturing operations
  • Experienced in process hazard analysis (PHA) techniques


Education and Training / Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in a scientific field such as chemistry, engineering, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field
  • EH&S experience within laboratory and/or manufacturing operations a must
  • Experience as sole EH&S specialist a plus
  • Knowledgeable of both federal and state (California) EH&S regulations required, experience with local (San Diego) regulations a plus.
