The Director of Environmental Health and Safety plans, implements and oversees Lipscomb University's environmental, health and safety program. Reporting to the AVP of Risk Management & Compliance, this position is responsible for developing and managing programs in safety and accident prevention, hazardous waste, biological and chemical safety, emergency preparedness, accident investigations and providing extensive training to educate students, faculty, and staff on the importance of adhering to University and environmental protection programs. This position collaborates with internal parties across campus and serves as the subject matter expert on environmental matters for the institution. This position provides consultative assistance and technical guidance to senior management and administrators on department strategies and objectives and briefs administrators on critical and sensitive issues. This position develops training programs to increase safety awareness among the campus community. This position is responsible for overall safety and regulatory compliance and maintains records for all EHS safety compliance programs
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Public Health Risk Management or related field;
  • Three plus years of progressive work experience in environmental health and safety management including experience in emergency management;
  • Detailed knowledge of environmental engineering principles, occupational health and safety sciences, and/or chemical process safety (e.g. chemistry, physics, toxicology, industrial hygiene, environmental permitting, environmental remediation, etc.);
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated effective experience working within applicable federal, state and local safety laws and regulations, including awareness of current issues that may impact the functional responsibilities of the occupation;
  • Experience developing effective working relationships with governmental/regulatory agencies and demonstrated ability to partner with internal administrators to implement effective hazard mitigation programs;
  • Demonstrated independent judgment, collaborative leadership, and strong problem-solving abilities and the ability to quickly change priorities, which may include or are subject to resolution of conflicts; and
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with a broad variety of individuals and groups across organizational lines.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Public Health Risk Management or related field;
  • Five plus years of progressive work experience in environmental health and safety management including experience in emergency management;
  • Safety work experience in higher education or other governmental settings; and
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist, Hazardous Materials Management Certification, Certified Safety Professional or other similar certifications.
Experience: Three to five years of related experience (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).

Typical Duties:
  • Conduct strategic planning process for EHS related programs;
  • Stay abreast of regulatory and best-practice changes in the safety, risk management, and environmental fields;
  • Provide compliance assistance, training, recordkeeping, and auditing of all applicable OSHA regulations;
  • Ensure campus compliance with all federal and state environmental regulations & Lipscomb's specific requirements;
  • Serve as campus liaison with OSHA, TOSHA, State Fire Marshal, local fire chief, EPA, and other local, state, federal agencies and organizations;
  • Develop educational materials and train required staff on EH&S related requirements;
  • Utilize proper mix of lecture, video, handout & computer-based training options in a customized fashion to educate a diverse workforce;
  • Perform periodic audits of labs, facilities and programs to identify and mitigate potential environmental and operational risks;
  • Assist AVP of Risk Management & Compliance with Emergency Management and Business Continuity planning efforts and other risk management duties;
  • Works with local officials to integrate university & municipal hazardous material and emergency response protocols;
  • Ensure compliant collection, segregation and disposal of all hazardous waste; ensure procedures for classifying, segregating, packaging, storage and transportation of wastes along with tracking documentation, including manifests are followed properly
  • Liaison for first report of injury under Worker's Compensation and investigation of employee and liability accidents;
  • Liaison with other departments that have environmental related responsibilities such as Service Operations, Chemistry, Biology, College of Health Science and Lipscomb Academy;
  • Organizes and directs response to releases or spills;
  • Develops and implements a systematic departmental inspection and safety audit program;
  • Supports laboratory safety including: chemical, biological, and physical;
  • Prepares and regularly updates hazardous material management and fire plans for buildings where required; and
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
