Market context: The changing landscape for business

Between 1970 and 2016 there has been a 69% loss in global biodiversity, driven both by climate change and destruction of natural landscapes. The economy is now starting to feel the pain: from the loss of pollinators in key agricultural production regions, to diminished flood-control in lowland grasslands, to stressed freshwater supplies, and reduced carbon absorption by forests converted to intensive agricultural and urban land uses.

According to the World Economic Forum, $44 trillion of economic value generation - more than half of the world's total GDP - is dependent on nature and its ‘ecosystem services'. Unchecked, decline in ecosystem services is expected to lead to a loss of global GDP in 2030 of $90-225 billion.

Role rationale: What does this mean for ERM?

It is clear that there is a material opportunity for ERM to lead this market wave, by bringing forward new consulting offerings, integrating nature and water-related risk into existing services, and advising on deployment of the US$ trillions in capital forecast to flow into Natural Climate Solutions.

ERM has strong credentials and established in-house capabilities, with 50-years' worth of deep technical experience to leverage around the world.

We are now seeking additional commercial talent to help us capitalize on the opportunity in North America.

What you will help drive forward: 6 ‘growth efforts' in FY24

ERM's Nature & Water growth program is led globally by a senior ERM Partner and fully backed by our global Excom. A steering committee comprises global leaders of our service and innovation organization, industries and clients, and regional CEOs.

In our investment case we identified six key areas of initial focus:
  • Engage ERM sellers with our ‘global offer' value proposition to take to market.
  • Drive hands-on go-to-market activities and branding in key industries, where our ‘global industry leaders' will be leading targeted client account development.
  • Build additional capacity through strategic hires and upskilling of delivery teams.
  • Continually refine service offerings through direct client feedback.
  • Establish data partnerships with key organizations (including tie-ups with global digital brands).
  • Consolidate key areas of the market through acquisitions and group hires.

The Position

This Partner-level position requires a driven client-facing leader who is interested in being part of ERM's thriving community of nature and water professionals, working across all service lines and collaborating with account teams in multiple industry sectors - and ideally, as comfortable with finance sector clients as multinational corporations.

Reporting jointly to the North America Regional Commercial Director as well as the Global Nature & Water Service Innovation Leader, this position is responsible for delivering our growth strategy for the region, by providing leadership to ERMers throughout the North America region organization.

The ideal candidate will have strong commercial acumen, an understanding of the regional market, and additional attributes including:
  • High performance in business development and delivery
  • Demonstrated success of positive commercial impact at large BU or regional level
  • Proven ability to build a book of business in professional services
  • Influential people leader, comfortable navigating ambiguity and adjusting plans as needed
  • Expertise in biodiversity, water, environmental economics an advantage but not necessary
  • Backgrounds in business consulting and digital innovation are also highly relevant

Day-to-day responsibilities will include:
  • Being in the market for 60% of your time (direct client meetings, representing ERM in both our own and others' events).
  • Playing a hands on role in securing 5-10 ‘flagship' client engagements (where we are getting a key client moving more powerfully on its nature and water-positive journey) and helping ERM teams be ‘sticky' for the next phases of the client journey.
  • Develop a regional growth plan that identifies success indicators at 3 month, 6 month and 1 year milestones.
  • Keep the nature and water market opportunity front of mind in the regional leadership team (successes, challenges, and new opportunities to accelerate growth).
  • Lead the client conversation across the business (both Partners and staff) to fire up enthusiasm in the firm to get after the market and build the skills we will need.
  • Develop a pipeline of strategic hires and acquisitions and support their ERM integration.

For the Commercial Lead - Natural Climate & Water Solutions (Director Level) position, we anticipate the annual base pay of $175,000- $215,000. An employee's pay position within this range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, performance, shift, travel requirements, sales or revenue-based metrics, and business or organizational needs. We also may have instances where employee's fall outside of the range based on the factors noted above. This job is also eligible for bonus pay.
