This role will work in Biosafety level 1-3 laboratories. This position is onsite at both VA/MD.
The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist supports the continuous improvement, implementation, and compliance of the environmental health and safety programs for the organization. The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist will utilize established workflows, risk levels and data to determine what practices are necessary to keep staff safe on the job.
The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist supports the implementation of policies, procedures, and best management practices throughout the organization. They also support training and process review for potentially dangerous tasks, so staff know how to do their jobs with the least risk of injury.
Responsibilities
Support and suggest improvements for organization safety training. Assist with the organization's compliance of all environmental and safety regulations and standards. Lead safety audits and inspections following routine process and detailed instructions. Support and sustain organization-wide safety committee. Review safety and environmental reports and information. Compile and provide feedback. Identify safety procedure improvements and generate Safety Data Sheets for review. Coordinate the work of outside contractors hired to support the Environment Health and Safety scope and monitor their performance. Compile, analyze, and interpret data. Report on department metrics as requested. Respond to all emergency environment and/or safety situations. Exercise judgement within procedures and practices to determine appropriate course of action. Follow up on accidents, incidents, near misses, and staff safety concerns. Support OSHA regulations including mandatory postings and logs. Maintain the Bloodborne Pathogens Program, Chemical Hygiene Program and Respiratory Protection Program to ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations and standards. Conduct new employee safety orientation and contractor safety training. Support organizational compliance requirements in accordance with all federal, state, and local regulations and standards. Utilize company policies and procedures to resolve any challenges.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Bachelors degree and 2-5 years' experience or equivalent experience.
- Prior health and safety experience required.
- 40hrs HAZWOPER preferred.
- DOT certification preferred.
- RCRA certification preferred.
- Waste Management Facility Operator License Class III preferred.
Travel Requirements:
- Travel may be required, as needed.
