General Summary

This position is responsible for designing, validating, and performing viral and/or bacterial assays and recording, analyzing and reporting the results. The Scientist I will apply advanced scientific knowledge, laboratory methods, and techniques to resolve complex problems. This position will support project work led by senior level staff and provide guidance to junior scientists and researchers.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develops the assays and designs experiments for in vitro studies.
  • Prepare and performs experimental procedures independently
  • Collects and analyzes data for review by management, utilizing sophisticated spreadsheets and statistical analysis software.
  • Presents the data and analysis clearly and accurately to the client or colleagues virtually or in-person.
  • May function as a group leader for conducting in-vitro assay or training.
  • Performs sample management timely and accurately.
  • Provides resolutions to a diverse range of problems, and resolves problems requiring the application of standard procedures and techniques.
  • Conducts experimental procedures following Standard Operating Procedures, Good Laboratory Practices and study protocols.
  • Participates in all required GLP training.
  • Exercises judgment in conducting experimental procedures, recognizing deviations from expected results and postulating sources of deviations.
  • Prepares reports, assist with preparing proposals and grants.
  • Performs all work tasks following laboratory safety requirements.
  • Observes appropriate safety and study requirements by reading, understanding and following Standard Operating Procedures, Good Laboratory Practices requirements, and study protocols.
  • Performs other duties as required by their supervisor.


Requirements/Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Virology, Microbiology or related discipline and 2 years of relevant lab experience, or MS degree in Virology, Microbiology or related discipline and 6 years' relevant lab experience; or BS degree in Virology, Microbiology or related discipline and 8 years' relevant lab experience; or Associate's degree and 13 years' relevant lab experience.
  • Capable of development and validation of viral assays (PRNT, MN, TCID50, HAI) or bacterial testing.
  • Proficiency in using relevant lab equipment.
  • Ability to work in a Biosafety Lab Level 2 and 3 environments.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills including correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Detail oriented; possess good planning and organizational skills; inquisitive; takes direction well.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Windows, Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Strong organization skills and capable of multi-tasking.
  • This position requires the ability to meet all entry requirements, including medical and vaccination requirements for work in both an ABSL-2 and ABSL-3 laboratory environment. Immunizations are required for this position and are determined by the study/agent. Some examples include Tetanus, Hepatitis B, Smallpox, Polio, and Influenza.


Physical Demands
  • Ability to perform work utilizing a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time without being able to leave the work area.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time without being able to leave the work area.
  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs in performing the work.
  • Ability to walk for reasonable distances in performing the work.


Certifications, Licenses & Registrations

No certifications are required; however, training includes Good Laboratory Practices and annual training on safe handling of viruses. Radiation safety training may be required depending upon the assays utilized.
