The Tumor Microenvironment Thematic Research Center (TME TRC) is focused on developing therapeutic targets at the intersection of tumor, stromal and immune biology within the TME with the goal of enhancing responsiveness to checkpoint blockade and targeted therapies. Comprised of scientists across multiple disciplines, we are responsible for the biology and translational science necessary to support drug development from target identification through to first-in-human studies.

Position Summary:

This opportunity is for a Senior Associate Scientist level position, who will join the Cancer Biology research team within the Tumor Microenvironment Thematic Research Center (TME TRC) at Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) in Redwood City, CA, and aid in the advancement of early-stage therapeutic targets at the intersection of tumor genetics and immune biology. This team is composed of experts in tumor-intrinsic biology, functional genomics, and immuno-oncology who develop therapies that leverage the interplay between the host and tumor. Our mission is to provide transformative therapeutics to cancer patients that improve response rates and durability to this challenging disease.

Position Responsibilities:

In the role as a Senior Associate Scientist within the TME TRC Cancer Biology Discovery team, the ideal candidate:
  • Is a highly motivated, interactive, and creative individual who possesses the ability to work across a highly matrixed environment to advance preclinical drug development programs from target identification/validation through IND enabling activities.
  • Designs and executes experiments based on protocols.
  • Analyzes and interprets experimental data.
  • Works within established procedures and in loosely defined problem-solving situations.
  • Makes decisions that require choosing between limited alternatives to resolve problems of varying levels of complexity.
  • Actively participates in troubleshooting of routine problems and initiatives to develop or improve new approaches/technologies.
  • Coordinates activities with other team members to achieve results.


Experience =

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelors Degree
    • 4+ years of academic and/or industry experience

Or
  • Masters Degree
    • 2+ years of academic and/or industry experience


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strongly prefer B.S. with 4-7+ years or M.S. with 2-5+ years of experience in cancer biology or cellular and molecular biology. Industrial experience and/or scientific knowledge of immunology/immuno-oncology is preferred.
  • Capable of independently executing experiments, troubleshooting, and performing data analysis.
  • Capable of learning and improving new techniques/approaches/technologies as the needs during a project evolve.
  • Requires hands on experience with aseptic cell culture and basic biochemical and molecular biology assays (western blots, ELISA, PCR, qPCR, Incucyte, cytotoxicity assays).
  • Experience with cell line engineering, flow cytometry, processing of primary human/mouse samples, and primary immune cell functional assays is highly desired.
  • Knowledge of or exposure to assay development and assay cascades to identify and optimize drug candidates is a plus.
  • Requires proficiency in utilizing software such as GraphPad Prism, Microsoft Office etc. for data analysis and figure generation.
  • Requires excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate, communicate and interact effectively with colleagues within the group and cross-functionally. Will participate on project teams, as needed.
  • Requires attention to detail with excellent organizational and record keeping skills.
  • This is a laboratory-based position in Redwood City, CA. There will be less than 10% travel.


The starting compensation for this job is a range from $79,000.00$110,000.00, plus incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility).

The starting pay rate takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills and where the job is performed.

Final, individual compensation will be decided based on demonstrated experience.
