The Position
Group Leader - (Senior) Principal or Distinguished Scientist, Structural Biology
The department of Structural Biology within Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED) has an exciting opportunity for a Group Leader position in structure based drug design to join our team. The successful candidate will lead the structural pursuit of diverse drug discovery targets as well as their independent research. The candidate will work in a highly collaborative environment, embedded in cross-functional teams; therefore, prior successful collaborations are expected. The candidate will use their deep expertise in protein biochemistry, biophysical and computational methods to support structure-based drug design of protein complexes of importance to human diseases. Accordingly, extensive track record of X-ray crystallography and/or Cryo-EM as tools to dissect complex biology and intermolecular interactions is essential.
Who we are:
The Genentech Structural Biology Department integrates macromolecular crystallography, Cryo-EM and NMR spectroscopy to drive drug discovery and uncover fundamental biology. Our department offers a highly interdisciplinary environment with unparalleled resources and unique opportunities for scientific collaboration and growth. We explore the structural and functional properties of proteins of therapeutic interest, and their interactions with ligands, substrates, and binding partners. Our group is involved in every step from construct design and protein purification to structure determination, in-depth analyses and drug design. We collaborate with scientists throughout the Research organization to advance both traditional "small molecule" and protein-based drug discovery as well as to pursue basic research questions regarding structure and function.
Who you are:
Ph.D. in structural biology, biochemistry, biophysics or related discipline
Productive postdoctoral and/or industry experience reflected in an established track-record of high impact publications, patents or pipeline project transitions
A proven track record in optimizing the expression and purification of challenging protein and protein complexes for functional and structural studies is essential
Strong technical expertise in structure determination by X-ray crystallography (required) and Cryo-EM (desirable)
Experience level: 4+ years post Ph.D. (Principal Scientist), 8+ (Senior Principal Scientist), 10+ (Distinguished Scientist)
Experience leading collaborations in cross-functional teams
Working with chemistry teams in structure based drug design is highly desirable
Experience with biophysical/biochemical assays for in depth characterization of proteins
Strong publication record in top tier journals
Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
Fearless attitude to tackle longstanding difficult problems
