The primary focus of this role is to support Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) as the Associate Director, Environmental, Health & Safety for the Summit, NJ facility within the Department of Environmental, Occupational Health, Safety and Sustainability (EOHSS). The individual in this role will be responsible for leading the site's industrial hygiene efforts to drive long-term company and stakeholder value. The position will develop, plan, organize, and execute EOHSS programs, policies, procedures, and training to maintain a safe, health, and environmental compliant facility. This individual should possess a strong background on technical safety issues pertaining to laboratory and cleanroom type environments.

The Associate Director will advocate, coach, coordinate, implement, assess, and improve environmental, safety, occupational health, and sustainability outcomes using global and local regulations and consensus guides, BMS management systems, policies and procedures, and promote compliant, forward-leaning culture and preserve BMS' reputation while driving shared Company objectives.

Major Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
  • Lead the site industrial hygiene program and safety programs. Partner with leadership teams to integrate safety and environmental management systems into operations, as measured by performance metrics.
  • Develop productive working relationships with federal, state and local authorities, technical and industrial groups and consultants to keep abreast of pending requirements and interpretations of existing rules.
  • Lead site and/or local area audits related to safety programs for compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Track and report safety metrics.
  • Maintain liaison with outside organizations, peer companies and agencies as necessary to assure compliance and communication.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local safety and medical surveillance laws, regulations, codes, rules, and consensus guides.
  • Develop and implement new EOHSS programs, policies, and procedures and update and improve existing ones. Translate Corporate and Divisional standards and guides into appropriate site procedures.
  • Provide applicable regulatory and technical practical guidance and execute programs, policies, procedures, and trainings for industrial hygiene, biological safety, laboratory safety, and chemical safety.
  • Execute Management of Change (MOC) program for EOHSS to include EOHSS Impact Assessments and Change Requests.
  • Participates in EOHSS operational and tier discussions, EOHSS committees and teams; and EOHSS self-assessments, inspections, GEMBAs, and audits.
  • Stops operations and activities that could harm the environment, workforce, or facilities. Investigates causes of industrial accidents and/or injuries to develop systemic solutions to minimize or prevent recurrence.
  • Utilize and manage site platforms for investigations, reporting, inspection, and other management system platforms and their outcomes.
  • Have a proven competency in completing biological risk assessments and participation/ managing an Institutional Biosafety Committee.
  • Conducts Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) reviews against BMS standards and applicable compliance standards, identifies gaps, and completed actions against gaps identified in a systemic fashion using appropriate quality and EOHSS system tools for documentation and CAPA tracking purposes.
  • Helps to coach and mentor EHS Team members during day-to-day operations.


Qualifications

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science degree in science or engineering.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of previous Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) experience in a research or manufacturing facility.
  • Minimum of two (2) plus years leadership with direct reports.
  • CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist) required.
  • Proven experience in leading a site industrial hygiene program.
  • Highly skilled in the use of Microsoft Office Suite and EHS systems like ENABLON (or similar).
  • Ability to work within a remote, matrix environment achieve high performance standards
  • Establishes operational objectives and assignments that align with EHS Department and global EOHSS objective's
  • May be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as, but not limited to clean room gowning , lab coats, safety glasses, hearing protection, and face shields.
  • Required to walk for extended periods of time, up to 2 hours per day.
  • Must be able to travel for business up to 5% of the time.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional license or certification; RBP (Registered Biosafety Professional), CBP (Certified Biosafety Professional), desired.
  • Proven experience in biosafety, such as review of research protocols, development of a biosafety manual, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees (IACUC), Institutional Biosafety Committees (IBC), and Institutional Research Boards (IRB) to ensure compliance with the National Institute of Health (NIH), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and other standards for recombinant DNA and vaccine research, desired.
  • A Master's / Graduate degree in a relevant discipline is desired.
  • Previous experience in chemical or pharmaceutical industry is preferred.
  • Six Sigma Certification (Green belt or above) desired.
