Gaithersburg, MD

We are seeking an Associate Director to lead our computational biology efforts within the Genomics team of Early Oncology Translational Medicine at AstraZeneca. The Gaithersburg Genomics team works in close collaboration with our Global Genomics teams in Waltham, MA and Cambridge, UK. This collaboration leverages cutting edge genomics technologies to develop the next generation of diagnostics, therapeutics, and treatment strategies that will improve the lives of cancer patients. The computational biology Associate Director will support translational research by analyzing various genomics sequencing data from WTS, WES and WGS to single cell applications (e.g., RNA-Seq, ATAC-Seq, CITE-Seq) for technology evaluation, development, and implementation. The ideal candidate will coordinate and liaise between TM Genomics and AZ Oncology Data Science & AI functions to insure seamless communication between the Genomics and DS&AI teams. Biological subject matter will encompass many areas of focus in Oncology, including tumors drivers, drug resistance, immuno-oncology, tumor-targeted delivery, cell therapy, and epigenetics. The ideal candidate will have proven academic and/or industry experience in the computational oncology field. This role will create impact to the wider AZ oncology community, and to our patients through the discovery of new biomarkers that inform drug combinations and patient selection strategies, discovery of novel oncology targets, and deepen knowledge of cancer biology and evolution.

Responsibilities

* Perform multi-modal (multi-omic) genomics analyses that require the integration of multiple types of single-cell genomics and spatial omics data or the integration of single-cell and bulk genomics data.
* Work closely with Genomic scientists on experimental designs for evaluating new assays and/or instrumentation
* Coordinate with Oncology Data Science and AI on implementing new instrumentation or assays
* Support the design of novel experimental strategies for genomics data generation from a variety of clinical sample types.
* Develop and apply analytical methods and pipelines for routine internal usage and evaluate publicly available analytical tools.
* Proactively engage in knowledge sharing and peer support, including training bench scientists to build expertise in computational biology tools.

Essential requirements for the role

* PhD in relevant field of computational biology, bioinformatics, systems biology, or oncology data science and experience in either: bulk and single-cell RNA sequencing technologies or cancer genomics/proteomics.
* Proficiency analyzing and interpreting data from multiple 'omic platforms (NGS sequencing, transcriptomic, epigenetic, proteomic etc.).
* Expertise in the analysis of genomic data (WES, targeted panels, WGS) covering QC, handling, processing & interpretation.
* Expertise in pathway enrichment tools and interpretation of the data to derive actionable biomarkers.
* Expertise in cancer genetics, cancer signaling and/or tumor microenvironment.
* Knowledge of statistical methods applicable to cancer biology.
* Ability to manage simultaneous projects to tight deadlines.

* Expertise in the development of novel statistical approaches for the analysis of biological data.
* Experience with various NGS platforms and associated analytic processes (Thermo Fisher Ion Torrent, Oxford Nanopore, PacBio, etc.)
* Experience with BD Rhapsody and 10X Genomics platform analysis
* Awareness of machine learning, graph modelling, artificial-intelligence, Bayesian analytics or other non-traditional approaches to model biological data
* Ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary science teams.
