Position Overview
WHC (Wildlife Habitat Council) is an established international organization which has been working at the intersection of business and nature for over 30 years. In our work with Fortune 1000 members, we advance companies' biodiversity, sustainability, employee engagement and community relations goals. WHC is currently in a growth and innovation period and is uniquely positioned to become the global leader in the biodiversity and business space.
The Director of Business Development is a member of the Senior Leadership Team and works under the supervision of the President to support the organization's activities and projects. The Director participates in meeting the objectives of the WHC strategic plan and has responsibility over revenue goals. Duties include member acquisition, member retention, value creation through consulting sales and oversight of the Business Development department. This role is key to WHC's engagements with corporate members and requires an independent and motivated professional who is comfortable representing WHC at national and global corporate events and working internally across departments and functions.

Work Environment
The position is included in WHC's dispersed workforce plan, providing the employee a choice to work out of the organization's Bethesda, MD office or from home. This position is mostly office based, with limited physical work. Occasional travel for internal events (staff retreats, WHC Conservation Conference, or similar), meetings, and conferences is expected. This position includes some light physical work.

Primary Responsibilities
Member Acquisition
- Define membership revenue projections, pipeline and opportunities, and lead departmental performance
- Develop and implement membership acquisition strategy
- Remain current with and communicate trends in corporate conservation, biodiversity, ESG and related sustainability issues
- Recommend business development opportunities to WHC Staff
- Develop and lead member communication and relationship management in alignment with the WHC strategic plan
- Delivering proposals/scopes of work (SOWs) for corporate members to engage with WHC Consulting
- Shepherd SOWs through corporate decision process
Member Retention/Value Creation
Management and Administrative
- Manage the Business Development staff
- Provide consistent status updates across WHC departments
- Manage effective hand-off from acquisition and value creation/SOWs to the WHC Consulting team
- Develop departmental budget and lead KPI tracking and reporting to internal stakeholders
- Represent the Department as a member of the WHC Senior Leadership Team
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in business, environmental sciences, or non-profit management
- Ability to work independently, be a self-starter, and have a problem-solving attitude
- 7+ years of experience in project management, inside or outside sales, and/or roles with high degree of administrative and data management skills
- 5 years of non-profit development/fundraising or business development preferred
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Computer skills must include high proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Dynamics CRM, PowerPoint)
- Excellent organization skills and attention to detail with ability to multi-task and prioritize competing priorities
- Customer service-oriented attitude
- Ability to mirror WHC's values and associated competencies internally and externally
