The Role
Where you fit in? Shell is a leading supplier of catalyst technology to the refining, petrochemicals, environmental, upstream, and renewable energy industries. The Catalysis and Analytical Technology group provides a central capability within Shell for Catalysis and Materials. In addition to supporting Shell through development and commercialization of catalysts for refineries, chemical plants, and environmental applications, the team also leverages key skills like materials synthesis, scale-up, and commercialization to enable Shell's Energy Transition ambitions. Involvement in these projects offers our staff the opportunity to broaden themselves, build up a larger network, and contribute directly to the Energy Transition. The Refining Catalyst Team is responsible for supporting Shell's refining catalyst businesses and, increasingly, Energy Transition programs. The team is accountable for invention and development of new catalysts and materials, quality assurance and technical support of catalyst manufacturing, laboratory- and pilot-scale performance testing of catalyst and materials, development of performance models for catalysts and materials, building of data analytic tools, and provision of technical support to our customers. What's the role - We are looking for an experienced Catalyst Researcher to join the Refining Catalysts Team. The Researcher will be responsible for discovery and development of heterogeneous catalysts for residue upgrading, hydroprocessing, and renewable feedstock applications, while also driving catalyst/materials innovation to support Shell's Energy Transition ambitions. This role requires a person with technical expertise, who can apply that understanding to the shaping of commercially viable catalyst/material solutions and various Energy Transition programs in a natural-teams way of working, and who has the interest and drive to guide new technology from discovery to commercial deployment. It also requires the ability to multi-task and be flexible in addressing multiple customer needs. If you are a highly motivated scientist who desires to support the Energy Transition and values seeing your ideas turned into commercial products, then this position may be a perfect fit for you. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a passion to apply and build their technical and program leadership skills to address the challenges of a variety of Energy Transition projects.Responsibilities and activities of the position includeWork within a larger R&D team to execute research programs to develop differentiated catalysts/materials to meet business needs. Lead efforts and direct teams to develop and carry out testing plans, review and interpret data, and deliver results to key stakeholders.Provide intellectual leadership and experimental support to Energy Transition projects.Support scale-up of new catalysts and technical service/customers.Support experimental teams through design and selection of catalyst preparation and testing equipment. Provide expertise for bench-scale testing equipment. Build strong working relationships with third-party equipment vendors and service providers.Maintain best safety practices.Bring outside-the-box, innovative approaches to the team, identifying novel materials, preparation methods, and testing protocols to drive innovation within the team. Be a team player: participate in and lead local and global natural teams to deliver catalyst/materials technology.Transfer knowledge to fellow researchers via presentations, technical reports, and day-to-day interaction. Maintain and expand upon current knowledge of heterogeneous catalysis chemistry. Stay abreast of catalyst technology developments externally in order to generate new ideas and maintain a healthy pipeline of promising catalyst development leads. What we need from you -A legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or Materials Engineering with at least eight plus (8+) years relevant experience in heterogeneous catalysis, surface science, inorganic chemistry, and/or physical chemistry.Specific skills and experiences must include:Experience working with catalyst or materials synthesis and characterization, preferably with commercial experience with hydroprocessing catalysts.Strong personal drive to contribute to the Energy Transition areas by leveraging catalysis/materials experience and learning new skillsCreativity, entrepreneurship, initiative, and good critical judgment.
