The Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences located in the School of Sciences at Elizabethtown College invites applications for a full-time, 10-month Laboratory Coordinator and Lecturer in foundational biological sciences courses.

Elizabethtown College is committed to investing in the growth of the School of Sciences, which includes the Departments of Biological and Environmental Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Psychology. We are seeking to hire diverse faculty to support our increasingly diverse student body. The department of Biological and Environmental Sciences consists of 8 full-time faculty members who value collaboration, interdisciplinary thinking, and student-focused teaching. In addition to serving students pursuing degrees in the sciences, the department has significant teaching responsibilities that extend to undergraduate majors in other schools, particularly the School of Human & Health Professions. We are located in the Masters Center for Science, Mathematics and Engineering, specifically in the Lyet Wing for Biological Sciences, which includes modern laboratory facilities, extensive equipment and traditional teaching spaces. The Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences supports the ideals of learning, discovery, and engagement through instruction and research in the biological sciences, including in the first-year curriculum. The School and faculty are committed to preparing students for lifelong learning, service, and professional outcomes. Approximately 30% of Elizabethtown College students are first-generation college students.

The Elizabethtown College Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences is seeking a motivated and organized individual to manage all aspects of introductory biology laboratory instruction and conduct associated activities. The individual will be responsible for keeping abreast with current trends in laboratory teaching and integrating best practices for, and assessment of student success. Creativity and professional development are highly encouraged and will be supported. The individual will need to communicate effectively with faculty colleagues (full-time or part-time) who are co-teaching our introductory biology lecture and lab sections (Bio111/Lab) and with student laboratory assistants. The individual will teach 3 classes (9 contact hours) in the fall and 4 classes (12 contact hours) in the spring semesters, which could be a mixture of introductory laboratory and lecture courses. Specific job duties are listed below. We prefer candidates with the ability to contribute to the diversity of our department and institution, whether through personal experience or teaching.

  • Updating the introductory biology lab manual with high impact, evidence-based teaching practices;
  • Performing ongoing inventory and maintenance of lab spaces and equipment;
  • Recruiting, hiring, training, and working with undergraduate students assisting in labs;
  • Teaching lecture and lab sections of our introductory biology series offered primarily for science majors including health science and exercise science majors;
  • Contributing courses as needed to the general education curriculum;
  • Participating in Department and School meetings, assessment processes, and supporting student initiatives.
  • Engaging in professional development related to teaching and learning, including on-campus and off-campus opportunities.
  • Supporting students through academic advising.

Required Qualifications:

A master's degree in a biological or cognate field and demonstrated teaching success is required. Applicants with a PhD in a biological or cognate field are also encouraged to apply.

Applications should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae or resume, a statement of teaching philosophy, a statement on diversity and inclusion in the classroom, and email addresses for three (3) references. References will be contacted by Elizabethtown College to submit letters of recommendation electronically.

Inquiries can be addressed to Dr. Jane Cavender (cavender@etown.edu). Review of applications will begin on February 22, 2023 and will continue until the position is filled.

Preferred Qualifications:

Applicants who have demonstrated high quality management of undergraduate science laboratory spaces and teaching students through laboratory and/or lecture are preferred. This includes demonstrated innovation and inclusion in laboratory curriculum development and teaching. Experience in working with students from culturally diverse backgrounds is preferred. Candidates with experience engaging students with various educational preparation levels are also preferred.
