The Marine Transportation Department (MT) at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy is seeking applications for a full time position of Instructional Specialist for Seamanship courses. The successful candidate would serve in the MT department reporting directly to the Department Chair. While this position is not a faculty position, applicants need to be comfortable supporting faculty and teaching USCG Deck license courses and associated labs in the areas of navigation, seamanship, lifesaving, firefighting, mooring operations, and vessel safety.
General Responsibilities:
Collaborate closely with Marine Transportation (MT) professors to support the objectives of the USCG Mariner Credential program.
Enhance the quality of education by assisting faculty in the professional MT courses and labs such as navigation, seamanship, and vessel operations and safety in a collaborative, team-based environment.
Assist faculty with ship handling and navigation simulation labs, including role playing as radio operator of passing vessels, Vessel Traffic Services, pilots and tugs; also responsible for starting equipment and initiating exercises.
Participate in Sea Term by supporting the Deck Training Coordinator in instruction of labs/classes.
Perform STCW assessments.
Grade and record laboratory assignments.
Assist Marine Transportation faculty in the development and revision of instructional materials, USCG approved course submittals and renewals.
Responsible for organizing and maintaining the Marine Transportation laboratory and equipment in the academic buildings and aboard the Academy training vessels in a clean and good working condition.
Prepare MT labs in support of faculty and student use.
Maintain safety-training equipment and departmental sextants.
Conduct inventories, maintain stock levels and order supplies in support of labs.
Qualifications:
Hold Bachelor of Science Degree in Marine Transportation or related field.
Current USCG Merchant Mariner Credential with Certification as Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch (OICNW) on Ships of 500 Gross Tonnage or More-or- higher level license
Minimum of three years of full-time experience in professional service supporting the maritime industry/field.
Salary: $55,000-$60,000, The Academy offers generous benefits policies and a competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. This position is exempt under FLSA. The Academy is not sponsoring immigration visas at this time.
