ABOUT THE POSITIONSenior Environmental Planner - Aviation | One of VHB's 30+ OfficesAre you passionate about advancing airport sustainability? Eager to deliver aviation projects with positive impacts on natural resources? Adept at navigating complex environmental regulations? VHB has the position for you! We are seeking a Senior Environmental Planner - Aviation to join our aviation and environmental team - a position that can be based out of any of our 30+ office locations across our footprint. VHB is known throughout the aviation industry as being passionate about our work, dedicated to our clients, collaborative in our approach, and highly effective at navigating the planning, environmental, transportation, engineering, and operational challenges for our aviation clients. We are looking for an exceptional leader to join our Aviation and Environmental team to oversee and implement strategies that will advance VHB's sustainable growth and industry prominence within the aviation market. Initiatives may cover a range of aviation-related disciplines, including planning, environmental services, technology-enabled consulting, and sustainability and resiliency. The ideal candidate should have a strong understanding of environmental and sustainable design practices, regulatory requirements, and current trends in the aviation industry such as sustainability, environmental justice, climate adaptation, greenhouse gas reduction, net zero, and advanced air mobility. We are looking for a driven and strategic thought leader who is passionate about delivering future-focused solutions that will shape more sustainable outcomes for our aviation clients. ResponsibilitiesResponsible for NEPA and sustainability/resiliency planning services, ideally in the aviation sector, and planning and managing all phases of planning work. Establishes and directs strategies for all aspects of planning, working collaboratively with planners, scientists, and engineers. Has significant responsibility in business development, client management, project management, and financial accountability. Responsible for the performance and results of a diverse, multidisciplinary team of planners, engineers, and/or environmental scientists. Responsible for staff training and mentoring. Serves as a thought leader and acts in an advisory capacity on administrative, technical, and regulatory aspects of planning.Strong understanding of environmental/sustainable design practices, regulatory requirements, and current trends in aviation and/or the environmental/sustainability fields.Skills and Attributes Advanced knowledge of principles and practices of planning, research, and data collection.Advanced knowledge of relevant specialization (e.g., environmental, sustainability, resiliency, aviation planning, environmental justice).Advanced knowledge in innovative planning and sustainability initiatives (e.g., dashboards and reporting, lifecycle cost assessments, energy and waste management, climate change mitigation) and technical environmental impact analysis methods.Advanced knowledge of and experience with federal, state, and local regulations and agencies, including NEPA. Superb technical, organizational, and critical thinking skills.Extensive experience in preparing NEPA documentation, sustainability management plans, airport master plans, greenhouse gas assessments.Broad understanding of issues facing airports (airport operations, FAA requirements, air, noise, water and natural resources, environmental justice, historic and cultural resources, stakeholder involvement, sustainability, resiliency, and climate change mitigation). Ability to apply statistical, algebraic, or geometric knowledge in practical situations.Advanced skills with Microsoft Office Suite.Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.Track record of generating new business development opportunities and preparing winning proposals.Advanced skills and knowledge in project and client management and collaborative problem solving with stakeholders, clients, and teammates.Team-oriented with the ability to perform multiple tasks independently in a timely manner and collaborate effectively and positively with co-workers.Self-motivated, highly organized, and detail oriented, while understanding the broad reach of the aviation industry. Skills and knowledge must be commensurate with required experience and job level.Supervising staff and consultants, including careful review of draft deliverables, providing constructive feedback, vetting consultant recommendations with colleagues, and ensuring high quality final deliverables.Qualifications15+ years of planning, consulting, business development, and compliance experience.BA in Planning or related area of study relevant to specialization (e.g., Environmental Studies, Urban Planning, Urban Design/Studies, Regional Planning, Sustainability Planning, Economics, Aviation, Civil Engineering, Urban Transportation Planning).Master's degree is preferred.Professional planning certification preferred (i.e., American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP), American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional (LEED AP), Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure-Envision (ENV SP) certification), American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) CM. Marketing and new business development are a must. Management and recruiting experience preferred.Working knowledge of airport settings and complexities associated with airport planning projects and associated environmental processing.Maintains active memberships in appropriate professional organizations and societies such as ACI-NA, Airports Consultants Council, AAAE, TRB/ACRP, WTS.
