Responsibilities:
We're looking for an Innovation Advisor to drive our projects with manufacturers who are exploring new markets or developing new products. As a part of our team, you may support NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnership Centers across the country in delivering market and technology intelligence research to small- and medium-sized manufacturers. You may also be called upon to lead ecosystem building activities for the North Carolina Defense Manufacturing Communities Support program, a US Department of Defense-funded program to deliver smart textile and wearable technology to optimize the health and performance of service members. As a trusted advisor, you will guide our clients through multi-stakeholder sensemaking and prioritization discussions, enabling collaborative decision making and planning.?
As a part of the RTI Innovation Advisors team, clients will depend on you for rigorous, independent research that will enable their initiatives to have meaningful human and business impact. What You'll Bring
Because you'll educate our clients and help them set goals, prioritize their activities, and achieve impact, you'll bring a solid understanding of what it takes to create new opportunities in the manufacturing sector. In addition, you will:

Have experience finding unmet needs, exploring new markets for manufacturing businesses, developing new products for manufacturing businesses, and conducting go-to-market planning.
Have strong technical, critical thinking, and analytical skills that enable you identify a technology's key points of differentiation, combined with the curiosity and creativity to consider markets where this differentiation may have value.
Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills (including English fluency), and a proven ability to develop well-structured, logical, and audience-relevant communications; must have strong MS PowerPoint and MS Excel skills.
Be a self-directed team member and leader committed to quality and efficiency, with proven ability to: work in highly ambiguous and complex environments; interface with client executives; motivate and guide colleagues and client teams.

We are seeking candidates with skills and experience to:

Lead matrixed teams of RTI IA's insights researchers to provide custom business and technology intelligence for manufacturers to support:

new product or service development (identifying needs or enabling technologies),
identification and assessment of new market opportunities (including market sizing, investment assessment, commercialization, go-to-market planning, and more),
and evaluating potential partnerships to further innovation initiatives and solutions development.

Guide our external clients through understanding the current and future state of relevant technologies such as advanced materials, sensors, intelligent systems, or enablers of sustainability (circular economy models, decarbonization).
Build relationships with existing customers and cultivate new customers to maintain and grow RTI IA's profile as a long-term, trusted advisor and partner.
Coach and guide internal teams in the creation of client deliverables (e.g., reports, presentations, decision support models), including executive summaries, detailed research (market and technology), and recommendations.
Co-design and co-deliver virtual and in-person working sessions and user-centered design workshops as a central part of client engagements.

Qualifications:
We recognize the value of your education and experience, which includes or is equivalent to:

Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Science/Engineering with experience in "deep tech" (especially "smart" electromechanical systems integrating advanced sensors and algorithms)
At least 5 years of experience in the manufacturing sector with some exposure to market strategy, product development, product management, or innovation.
Relevant experience in project management, research synthesis, and presentation of recommendations for a variety of key stakeholders.

Ideal candidates may also have:

Advanced degree in business administration or supply chain management
Experience with direct stakeholder engagements (internal or external stakeholders), such as engaging end users to understand their needs and test the potential value of a new technology
Entrepreneurial experience with a deep tech startup company
Technical expertise in the defense sector, which may include personal protection equipment, sensors and equipment for human performance optimization, automation and threat identification, and cybersecurity.
Have a working knowledge and general understanding of the U.S. Department of Defense agencies and mission, structure, priorities, and funding mechanisms
Strong primary research skills
Familiarity with innovation management practices and frameworks
Experience with workshop design and facilitation

The anticipated pay range for this role is listed below. Our pay ranges represent national averages and may vary by location as a geographic differential may be applied to some locations within the United States.
