NRDC is a non-profit environmental advocacy organization. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our people helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act and many of the implementing regulations. Today, our team of more than 700 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy advocates, communications experts, and others work across the United States and the globe from our offices in Bozeman, Montana; Chicago; New York; San Francisco; Santa Monica; Washington, D.C.; and Beijing. NRDC is seeking a Regional Director to work with the Nature team in our San Francisco, Santa Monica, or Denver office.Position SummaryThe Regional Director on Fossil Fuel Engagement will work to advance NRDC's goals of creating a world free from fossil fuels. This advocate will lead our engagement at the regional level, acting as the point person with our key partners and coalitions in NRDC's priority states, who are focused on campaigns that seek to stop the growth of fossil fuel development in our nation's communities and landscapes. Specifically, the advocate will operate where expanded drilling threatens to lock in decades of fossil fuel production with an emphasis in the Western U.S., including but not limited to New Mexico, Colorado, and the Permian Basin. The advocate will coordinate with community partners and staff to effectively engage local governments, Congress, the Department of the Interior, and the Biden administration on policies that pertain to fossil fuel extraction. The Regional Director will also work with staff throughout the organization as part of the cross-cutting effort on fossil fuels.

Responsibilities:
Strive to provide community leadership for regional fossil fuel strategies, campaigns, and policies, contributing to and supporting the institution's approach as it relates to climate and biodiversity goals Act as the institution's point person with regional partners, helping to devise and implement key fossil fuel campaigns in priority regionsHelp devise and deploy novel strategies and tools in opposition to fossil fuel projectsIncorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion into fossil fuel work and partnershipsPlace an emphasis on building out key communication channels, maintaining a footprint that will reach diverse audiences through writing and media engagement

Qualifications:
RequiredAt least 5 years of relevant professional experience in effectively developing, managing, and sustaining advocacy campaigns. A proven track record in partnering with regional stakeholders and codeveloping advocacy campaignsAn ability to foster and cultivate a positive environment in terms of working with colleagues and external stakeholdersA commitment to develop and foster an environment of inclusionRequired: Advanced organizational and project management skills, including the ability to effectively communicate and deploy written and verbal skills to advance key conceptsRequired: Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience Commitment to NRDC's values and mission.PreferredEight or more years of leading campaigns, with authoritative knowledge concerning the nature of fossil fuel development, including: the role of permitting; the economic, social, and ecological impacts associated with development; governance models that accelerate development; and a familiarity with the role that federal and state subsidies have on supporting fossil fuel project adoptionAn established track record of building community centered campaigns that have a proven record in assisting the slowing or halting the development of regionally scaled fossil fuel projectsAn established history of employing advanced interpersonal skills, providing guidance, feedback and coaching in the context of complex campaign dynamicsAdvanced educational degree in law, policy or science or equivalent experienceNRDC is committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion, both in our work and in our workplace. For this position, the salary starts at $105,000. Internal equity considerations will be reviewed before making a final offer.
