The Sonoma Botanical Gardens seeks a dynamic leader to direct one of Northern California’s most impressive botanical gardens. Achieving Sonoma Botanical Garden’s mission of inspiring an appreciation and understanding of the beauty and value of Asian and California Native Plants.
Since its founding in 1987 by Jane Davenport Jansen, Sonoma Botanical Garden (SBG) has been dedicated to celebrating and conserving the plant diversity of temperate East Asia. The garden is home to one of the largest collections of scientifically documented, wild-sourced Asian plants in North America and Europe. In 2021, this vision grew to encompass another biodiversity hotspot: California native plants. At first glance, the Garden is meandering pathways, seasonal features, and hidden picnic spots, but a closer look reveals there is so much more. Every plant is accounted for with unique identifiers (accession numbers), species name, and source information. The result is a unique, tranquil, immersive experience of conservation in action.
SBG has continued to grow and refine its vision over the years. With a healthy endowment, qualified staff, a strong board, and the recent development of a long-term site plan, SBG is ready to reach its next level of sustainability and impact.
The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for the overall leadership and management of the garden and the implementation of the mission. The ED is responsible for maintaining the highest standards at Sonoma Botanical Gardens through effective management techniques and responsible direction of long-term strategic planning in collaboration with the management team. The ED oversees the training and supervision of the entire staff, volunteers, interns, and any others that assist in the garden, ensuring that all work is accomplished in a safe and timely manner.
The Sonoma Botanical Garden is located in the heart of California’s stunning wine country in Glen Ellen, CA. The Executive Director will be expected to live on the premises of the Botanical Garden with its stunning plants, vineyards, and breathtaking views of the rolling hills of Northern California.
A competitive compensation package, including a comprehensive benefits package, will be offered, commensurate with experience. Sonoma Botanical Garden encourages application from individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences. The expected salary range for this position is $150,000 - $180,000. The Executive Director will be expected to live on the premises in the “Director’s House” and to be regularly available for security and emergency issues.
