Major Function

 

World Wildlife Fund (WWF), one of the world’s leading international conservation organizations, seeks a Director of Nature Positive to lead the WWF Oceans team efforts to develop and implement systems to better measure and track progress of interventions and outcomes in support of Nature Positive Seascapes and Business. This position will also be fundamental to advance real-world projects on nature-positive business – providing pathways and technical guidance for how this would be achieved and contribute to Nature Positive Seascapes. In addition, this role would help oversee efforts to implement coordinated monitoring and evaluation across priority Nature Positive seascapes to ensure we are linking collective knowledge and impacts across places we work. Responsibilities
 

 

  • Leading efforts on implementation of Nature Positive measurement framework in both seascapes and business
  • Thought leadership to develop strategies and practice to inform conservation actions that will contribute to Nature Positive Seascapes and Business; this includes contribution to proposals, on-going projects, speaking engagements, etc. Close collaboration with our Area-Based Conservation and Ocean Markets & Finance teams.
  • Support Oceans Market and Blue Finance Team in engagement with targeted industry sectors (i.e., wind farms, port development/coastal development operations, shipping) by developing and executing Nature Positive Business pilots considering for spatial management approaches, nature based solutions, and strategies to achieve net positive impacts on biodiversity, people, & climate.
  • Engage with the Blue Finance team to align nature positive business pilots to long-term innovative, blended financing mechanisms and/other financing opportunities to ensure adequate blended financing for long term impact in the seascape and opportunities for scaling work in other target seascapes.
  • Act as advisor to the development of the SBTN Oceans Hub workstreams for marine renewables, coastal development, and shipping when launched incorporating learnings from the Nature Positive Business pilots
  • Engage collaboratively with other WWF US Goal Teams and working groups (ie. Infrastructure team, aquaculture and seaweed team, and seafood jurisdictional approach team) and WWF global working groups (ie. Orsted Biodiversity and Nature Positive working group) to develop pilots that consider for contribution and align across other needed WWF areas of work.
  • Serve as part of the core engagement team for private sector and financial institution meetings on Nature Positive Business and Blue Finance as technical lead for Nature Positive work.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
    Qualifications
     
    • Position requires at least 10 years of experience supporting design, implementation, and measurement in support of international biodiversity conservation projects (or related fields).
    • A Master’s degree is required. Ph.D. in a marine-related discipline is highly desired.
    • Familiarity with ocean zoning factors, trade-offs, and public processes for spatial planning
    • Experience with Blue Economy stakeholder engagement that brings various ocean resource users together, and knowledge of conflict drivers and trade-offs factor
    • Knowledge of international conservation organizations, bodies, and conventions (i.e. FAO, CBD)
    • Strong project management skills as well as excellent organizational skills.
    • Strong communication skills to a variety of audiences, including scientific writing, proposal developments, scientific presentations; presentations to private sectors, donors, etc.
    • Ability to work on initiatives with multiple and competing priorities.
    • Ability to work effectively as a team member with a wide range of individuals, across cultures and time zones
    • Must be willing to travel up to 20% of the time, national and international, for meetings to private sector offices and on the water projects in country as needed to develop projects and present to stakeholders.
