Position: Research Scientist
Location: HAX, Newark, NJ
The Role:
MAA'VA has developed a carbon sequestering eco-concrete that uses non-recyclable plastic waste as a replacement for sand, advancing solutions to climate change crisis, waste crisis and rapid urbanization.
We are looking for a highly-experienced Materials Scientist to join our team. This position will expose you to an exceptional multidisciplinary group of entrepreneurs and scientists who are working together in the development of green and sustainable novel technologies that have a profound impact on healing and restoring our planet.
Job Description:
* Working with the team to create new precast concrete products by incorporating novel polymeric aggregates out of plastic waste and testing their performance in concrete mixtures to initiate design concepts, demonstrate benefits, scale-up formulations.
* Conducting research including hands-on lab testing, data analysis, literature review, and field testing/demonstration.
Qualifications:
* Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, or other comparable fields plus one or more years of relevant experience in research and development on concrete
* Knowledge of concrete chemistry, hydration reaction, carbonation reactions and polymeric materials chemistry
* Strong mechanical and chemical analytical skills
* Knowledge of design and development of alternative cementitious materials
* Ability to extend principles of reactivity mechanisms from cement to alternative binders
* Familiarity with statistical methods including design of experiments and machine learning methods
Responsibilities:
* Working with the team to create new precast concrete products by incorporating novel polymeric aggregates out of plastic waste and testing their performance in concrete mixtures to initiate design concepts, demonstrate benefits, scale-up formulations.
* Exploit hydration/carbonation reactions of cementitious materials to develop sustainable binder systems
* Develop a screening methodology and qualification criteria to assess the suitability of binder systems
* Conduct laboratory functions, including hands-on testing, materials characterization, concrete testing
* Has demonstrable new product development/commercialization and technology transfer experience.
* Experience in troubleshooting, using data driven approaches to problem solving, including root cause analysis methods, design of experiments, and statistical data analysis.
* Self-starter that has demonstrated the ability to define and own a process from scratch and roll out that process through adept communication to a diverse team.
* Strong attention to detail, high level of accuracy and ability to multitask and prioritize workload.
* Enthusiastic, innovative and motivated collaborator. Excellent creative problem solver and committed to continuous learning.
