Job DescriptionSalary: $45/Hour
This is a temporary position, expected to last 3 months, or potentially longer. The position may require working after hours or occasional weekends to respond to emergency or non-emergency situations. The candidate will serve as an Environment, Safety and Health Representative (ESHR) to advocate and provide technical resources on matters of health and safety. Candidates must be local to the Upton, NY area.
Primary responsibilities include providing professional knowledge and expertise in the administration, support and implementation of health and safety programs to assure compliance with regulatory agency guidelines, consensus standards and institutional policies. This hands-on position involves partnering with line management representatives, employees, senior staff and trade unions. Fieldwork venues include: laboratories (chemical, biological, physical, nanomaterials, etc.); construction sites; physical plants (infrastructure and maintenance) and large experimental equipment.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Requires a minimum of a Bachelors degree with major course work in industrial engineering, safety engineering, occupational health, industrial hygiene, chemistry or a closely related field.
- Must demonstrate the ability to present ideas and concepts orally and in writing in a clear and concise manner to communicate technical information and interact with individuals with diverse backgrounds and levels of understanding including: senior management; line workers; engineers; chemists; trade workers; etc.
- Must be competent in of Microsoft Office Suite
- Professional experience must demonstrate the ability to effectively initiate and lead projects or programs with minimal supervision.
- Possession of a valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record is required.
- Knowledge of principles and practices of industrial and occupational safety/health programs; pertinent laws, ordinances, rules and regulations; principles and techniques of employee training; and report preparation and statistical analysis.
- Must demonstrate a broad knowledge in and familiarity with mechanical systems, including test equipment.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Experience in a Research and Development environment.
- Qualified to submit for certification as: Occupational Health and Safety Technologist, Associate Safety Professional, Certified Safety Professional, or Certified Industrial Hygienist.
- A strong background in health and safety regulations and building codes is highly desirable.
ENVIRONMENT, SAFETY & HEALTH REQUIREMENTS
- Must be capable of climbing ladders and scaffolds to perform inspections and tests, and must be able to perform visual examinations of mechanical devices and test articles
- Frequently is required to stand; walk for extended periods; sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.
- Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include color and close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.
- Required to wear respiratory protection, hearing protective devices, basic construction personal protective equipment and other safety equipment.
- Must be able to operate a motor vehicle for travel onsite
- The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level dependent upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills he or she brings to the position, as well as the amount of relevant experience.
