Your opportunity:

We are seeking an Environmental Scientist/Sediment Specialist to join our team. We deliver a diverse range of engineering and environmental services to cities, counties, state and federal agencies, Tribes, and private clients throughout the West Coast and Rocky Mountains. This position will support our Sustainable Development practice area on sediment monitoring and remediation projects as well upland Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS) projects. Typical projects involve marine or freshwater sediment sampling or monitoring, investigation of adjacent upland areas, and occasional construction oversight for sediment dredging or capping, creosote pile removal, or beach restoration projects. This position will require you to perform work in the field up to 40% of your time on a range of interesting and challenging projects.

As an Environmental Scientist/Sediment Specialist, you will be responsible for:

* Evaluating the fate and transport of environmental contaminants in various matrices with an emphasis on marine and freshwater sediments.
* Preparing sediment sampling and analysis plans (SAPs), and quality assurance project plans (QAPPs) for sediment investigations and related projects.
* Leading sediment sampling efforts using a variety of coring and grab sampling techniques.
* Writing site characterization reports comparing sediment chemistry, bioassay, tissue, and bioaccumulation results to Washington State Sediment Management Standards.
* Quality assurance review and validation of laboratory analytical data in accordance with various protocols and local jurisdictions.
* Assisting with Remedial Investigation / Feasibility Studies (RI/FS) and comparing results to MTCA and site-specific cleanup levels.
* Coordinating with the analytical laboratory to order sample collection containers, completing sample chain of custody forms, and packaging and delivering samples to the lab.
* Managing collected data using spreadsheets (Microsoft Excel) or a database (SQL, Microsoft Access).
* Uploading lab data to Ecology's Environmental Information Management (EIM) system.

Required education and qualifications :

* 2 - 10 years of experience, and at a minimum a Bachelor's degree in environmental science, marine science, geology, or similar field.
* Field experience conducting sediment and other environmental investigations.
* Experience using field meters, sampling equipment, GPS units, and working with Microsoft programs including Excel.
* Attention to detail and ability to organize and compile accurate field data and observations.
* Excellent listening skills, ability to carry out detailed instructions, and ability to think creatively.
* Strong team interaction skills and a dedication to health and safety practices in the field.
* Willingness to travel for field work.

The strengths you will need to succeed in this role will include:

* Interpreting laboratory analytical results and summarizing data in tables and figures, in comparison to MTCA, Sediment Management Standards, or other cleanup levels and standards.
* Experience with sediment cleanup actions at the Lower Duwamish Waterway and other CERCLA sites in Washington and Oregon.
* Excellent problem-solving, verbal, and written technical communication skills.
* Can self-direct work and lead tasks and/or manage small to medium projects.
* Experience writing Work Plans, SAPs, and QAPPs.
* Flexibility to work on a variety of project types and challenging field conditions.
* Ability to support environmental scientist needs for other projects in our Water and Restoration practice areas.
* A passion for delivering great work to our clients to generate repeat business, and a desire to help land new work on interesting projects that restore the environment.
