Duties and Responsibilities

* Coordinate and perform in providing research related care to animals, mainly animal surgical models.
* Administer daily treatments and medications for animals as instructed or required. May require some late night, early morning, and overnight care. Weekend work required on a rotational basis.
* Evaluate potential problems relating to the health and social welfare of animals; notify supervisor of perceived problems and/or take action to correct changes in environmental conditions, which affect the well-being of the animals.
* Assist in the organization and scheduling of procedures to facilitate projects; coordinate and participate in the performance of routine and standardized tests.
* Administer routine and special treatments to animals as instructed, prescribed and/or required; assist in diagnostic treatment.
* Perform technical skills such as venipuncture, surgical assistance, animal restraint, radiology, injections, behavior testing and formulate and administer special diets as requested.
* May anesthetize animals as required and serve as circulating nurse during procedures requiring anesthetized animals; assist in animal surgery as requested.
* Must demonstrate the ability to safely handle and restrain animals. Ensure detailed records and input of data into collection database on a routine basis.
* Assist in diagnostic laboratory procedures, performing routine tests. Assist in euthanasia and tissue collection and preservation, with possible opportunity for performing laboratory assays.
* May participate in developing and maintaining an appropriate and varied enrichment plan for animals. Work as part of a team to ensure all needed care of animals is completed in a timely fashion. Participate in regular lab meetings.
* Schedule laboratory studies with multidisciplinary teams of researchers. Maintain protocol and regulatory compliance with DEA, USDA, IACUC, and NIH Perform animal handling, surgery, anesthesia, and euthanasia. This will include real-time analysis of animal responses in order to maintain animal physiologic parameters within study guidelines.
* Order and maintain animals, controlled substances, supplies needed for laboratory studies
* Maintain medical, surgical, controlled substance, and study records. For GLP studies, this will involve substantial documentation.
* Work with other technicians, medical students, graduate students, and fellows in all of the above. This typically involves 2-3 trainees for each PI who are learning.

Required Qualifications At This Level

Education/Training

Work generally requires a bachelor's degree in botany, biology, zoology, psychology or other directly related scientific field.
