Job Description

About the role:
Are you looking for a patient-focused company that will inspire you and support your career development? If so, be empowered to take charge of your future at Takeda. Become a vital contributor to our inspiring, bold mission of ‘safety by design' by joining as a Discovery Toxicologist in the Drug Safety Research and Evaluation division of Preclinical and Translational Sciences at our San Diego, CA site.

Our ideal candidate will have a proven track record in prominent roles supporting toxicological prediction for cross-functional Discovery teams. She/he/they will be able to leverage their deep insights into computational, cellular and pathway mechanisms, coupled with knowledge of toxicology in order to develop and provide computational systems and direction to improve the understanding around biological mechanism and predictive toxicological risk. An emphasis on working on gastrointestinal, oncology, rare and/or neuroscience disease areas as well as experience in various therapeutic modalities (small molecules, biologics, oligonucleotides, cell therapy) would be a strong plus.

Join Takeda as a Computational Biologist, Toxicology, based in San Diego, CA.

OBJECTIVES

As part of the Global Discovery Toxicology Team, you will use computational approaches (AI/ML/DL) to provide data-driven, biological hypotheses around safety endpoints to interdisciplinary teams within and across Global Safety.
Work with scientific informatics groups and data owners to bring internal and external data sources together in a way that enables yourself and other computational scientists to use ML/AI approaches with a focus on data needed for toxicology prediction and retrospective analysis
Work as part of a team of safety assessment and computational scientists across Preclinical and Translational Sciences and therapeutic projects
Work with investigative and translational laboratory scientists and project toxicologists to test specific hypotheses applying data from novel toxicity mechanism-based assays and in vivo endpoints/biomarkers in developing computational models to better understand safety mechanisms
Career development opportunities exist to represent Takeda Drug Safety Research and Evaluation on internal and external scientific working groups and committees.

How you will contribute:

ACCOUNTABILITIES

Provide the toxicology team with hypotheses for mechanism of action and/or biomarker on a given phenotype or risk including generating models for proactive and retrospective risk assessment of target- and chemotype/modality-related toxicities
Develop automated, comprehensive target safety reviews that project toxicologists can modify further with risk mitigation plans for early drug discovery project teams based on literature, bioinformatics, and other predictive tools.
Develop and apply state of the art in silico assessments to aid toxicology representatives in the selection and optimization of large and small molecule therapeutics, as well as new therapeutic modalities

Aid in the development of computational models for early investigation into mechanisms of toxicity for the proactive management of potential safety liabilities and communication of impact to toxicology leads and teams, as well as for the retrospective assessment of unanticipated toxicities incorporating all available data (nonclinical, clinical, public, ‘omics)

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

Minimum of PhD in a computational or scientific discipline and 3+ years of experience working at a pharmaceutical company or MS in a computational or scientific discipline with 9+ years of pharmaceutical experience developing and implementing biological computational models
Strong understanding of human biology and perturbation assessment
Computational biology experience processing and utilizing multi-omics data for model development and biomarker discovery (e.g. transcriptomics, genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, etc.) with experience communicating clear results, hypothesis and experimental recommendations to scientific teams
Strong technical experience in computational biology coding and analyses in a manner that enables reuse by self and others
Experience in the drug discovery process from the pharmaceutical industry, with an understanding of safety and toxicology a plus
Demonstrated project team experience at a pharmaceutical company and ability to work effectively in a matrix, global environment as part of a multidisciplinary team
Strong problem solver who is highly organized with the ability to thrive in an environment with rapidly changing priorities
Broad scientific knowledge including pharmacology, toxicology, physiology and biochemistry.
Experience in development across mixed modalities, especially oligonucleotides and cell therapy and knowledge of gastrointestinal and/or neuroscience diseases, oncology and/or immunology is desired
Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to develop solid, long-term relationships, influence others, and adept at working across multiple cross-functional areas
Excellent technical, oral and written communication skills
