Job Description

This position is managerial position. The Manager is responsible for the overall operations of the volatile organics department. These responsibilities include but are not limited to meeting client satisfaction goals, managing the human resources within the department, and ensuring health and safety and quality assurance plan compliance. Serves as a technical resource to department employees, as well as Project Managers, sales personnel, and clients. Make recommendations to laboratory management in regard to process improvements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

* Develops and monitors group analysis schedules based on current and projected workloads and staffing.

* Accountable to meet On Time Delivery goal of greater than 90% within department.

* Responsible for the consistent and proper use of backlog training and update process.

* Supervises analyses on potentially hazardous samples.

* Reviews and interprets results from samples analyzed.

* With quality control, determines acceptable corrective actions for the nonconformance occurring within his/her group.

* Interviews and evaluates candidates for job openings within area of responsibility.

* Initiates improvements to procedures process, work methods, equipment performance and quality of service.

* Responsible for upholding and enforcing Company policies, including but not limited to, Quality, Safety, Standard Operating Procedures, Ethics, and Harassment.

* Develops and reviews standard operating procedures for the group, as needed, to address new or revised analytical methods.

* Acts as problem solver for unique technical situations, making recommendations on data acceptability.

* Communicates department issues and provides status reports to Laboratory Management.

* Recommends process improvements to improve efficiency.

* Sets standards for and monitors productivity within the group.

* Responsible for controlling costs within the group.

* Conducts subordinate annual formal performance evaluations, goals and development.

* Responsible for maintenance of inventory within his/her group.

* Monitors subordinates' work daily to ensure both satisfactory productivity as well as compliance.

* May prepare and analyze samples for analysis based on method requirements.

* May upload data files to reporting system.

* May review data produced in assigned department and authorizes its release.

* Expected to champion Health & Safety and assume ownership for the safety of those employees within her/his responsibility.

* Participates in subordinates career planning process, evaluations, and training. Initiates actions leading to their professional development (targeted training, temporary job assignments, etc.)

* Interprets company, divisional and laboratory policies and procedures to subordinates.

* Trains subordinates on work procedures.

* Recommends or initiates personnel actions such as promotions, transfers, bonus distribution, disciplinary measures or termination actions.

* Familiarity with GC/FID, GC/MS, GC/ECD and other methodologies. Familiarity with established procedures, for the preparation and documentation of samples using GC, GC/MS, 8270, 625, 8081, 8011, NWTPH Dx and other methodologies

Qualifications

At least 8 year's analytical experience, or combination, at company or equivalent experience elsewhere. Bachelor's degree in Chemistry is preferred. 3+ years supervisor experience is preferred.
