Main Purpose of Job

This full time contractual position functions as a full- performance laboratory scientist in the Division of Environmental Sciences. This position performs, analyses, interprets, and reports test results on environmental and/or food samples submitted to the State Public Health Laboratory using incubations, digestions, extractions, and analyte quantification through approved FDA, EPA, CDC, and/or Standard methods. This testing is performed as part of the\\nLaboratories Administration's activities to promote, protect, and preserve the health\\nand well-being of the people in Maryland in conjunction with State and Federal funded\\npublic health initiatives.\\n


Education: ABachelor's degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Medical Technology, Pharmacy or Zoology from an accredited college or university. \\nExperience: Two years of experience working in a chemistry laboratory performing analytical tests on environmental, biological or multi-matrix samples; or two years of experience working in a medical or public health laboratory performing diagnostic or public health testing on human specimens. \\nNotes:\\n1. Candidates may substitute additional graduate education at an accredited college or universityat the rate of 30 credit hours in the above noted disciplines for each year of the required experience for up to two years of the required experience. \\n2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Science Research Officer classifications or Medical Laboratory Specialists specialty codes in the Science related field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.\\n


The desired candidates should possess the following:\\n\\n\\n Experience with the principles of analytical radiochemistry or food radiochemistry techniques\\n Experience with quality control and quality assurance procedures\\n Experience troubleshooting radiochemical instrumentation such as a Gas Proportional Counter, Liquid Scintillation Center, Gamma Detector and Alpha Spectrometry\\n \\n\\n\\n

\\n\\nContractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.\\nLeave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.\\n\\n\\n
