Job Description
Position Title: Teacher Education & Urban Advantage Elementary Manager

Department: Children's Education

Reports to: Manager of School Programs

FLSA Status: Full-time, Exempt

Grade: 7

Term: 35 hours per week

Position Description:

The Teacher Education (TE) and Urban Advantage (UA) Elementary Manager is primarily responsible for providing Brooklyn Botanic Garden's (BBG) professional learning opportunities for pre-K through HS teachers and collaborating with peers at UA partner institutions to provide professional learning to teachers via the UA Elementary program. The position includes ongoing professional learning with a focus on science teaching and learning that aligns with NYS/NGSS, culturally responsive teaching, and differentiating instruction for diverse learners.

Core Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement BBG's strategy for p-credit and custom workshop offerings for pre-K through HS teachers at BBG.
  • Collaborate with peers at other UA partner institutions to plan and implement professional learning workshops for UA Elementary teachers.
  • Attend monthly UA partner meetings, participate in additional UA events, workshops, and trainings, support UA Elementary lead teachers.
  • Collaborate with BBG colleagues in planning and implementing professional workshops for UA middle school teachers, parent coordinators, and administrators as needed.
  • Participate in Teacher Support Visits and Family Engagement Visits at UA Elementary schools.
  • Manage budget, supplies, records, etc., for p-credit and custom workshops at BBG; contribute to departmental reporting both quantitatively and qualitatively.
  • Teach online and in person; facilitate synchronous and asynchronous courses; build coursework and resources on the Moodle platform.
  • Support other BBG Education programming and department initiatives as needed.


Desired Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree/teaching certificate in science, education, science education, and a minimum of 3 years of classroom teaching experience (elementary teaching a plus) with a strong preference for a master's degree; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Familiarity with the NGSS, NYC Science Scope and Sequence, Amplify Science, Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education and the CR-S Framework
  • Experience with plants, horticulture, and/or botany
  • Experience teaching science with living things
  • Fluency and comfort with written and spoken English
  • Ability to communicate effectively with different audiences, including teachers, colleagues at BBG and peer institutions, families, and school administrators
  • Collaborative skills to work alongside other BBG colleagues and UA partners at peer institutions
  • Organizational skills including maintaining supplies, keeping track of participant data, and reporting on programming
  • Ability to work weekends and occasional evenings
  • Experience teaching students with special needs, including students learning English, and students with learning differences, a plus
  • Experience providing professional learning a plus
  • Oral fluency in a second language a plus (especially Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Arabic, and Haitian Creole)


Work Environment:
  • Some work takes place in busy indoor and outdoor public spaces such as classrooms, greenhouses, and Garden grounds.
  • Personal workspace is in an open-plan office shared with other Education department colleagues.
  • Work requires active communication with BBG colleagues, UA partners, and UA teachers and administrators.


Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary Range - $64,000 - $80,000

    Brooklyn Botanic Garden considers several factors when determining the appropriate salary to offer a candidate within the listed salary range. These factors include (but are not limited to), the scope and responsibilities of the position, a candidate's relevant work experience and education/training, job skills, equity across the institution, as well as market and organizational considerations.
