Responsibilities:
POSITION SUMMARY:Responsible for identifying and isolating infectious disease-causing organisms. Responsible for conducting examinations on specimens collected from patients for bacterial, viral, protozoan and fungal infections. Isolate and make cultures of bacteria or other microorganisms in prescribed media, controlling moisture, aeration, temperature, and nutrition. Responsible for receiving and analyzing laboratory specimens and reporting results in a timely manner in accordance with Laboratory Policies and Procedures. Examines physiological, morphological, and cultural characteristics, using a microscope, to identify and classify microorganisms in human specimens. Clinical microbiologist duties include assisting physicians in diagnosing illnesses by identifying disease-causing microorganisms and selecting treatments by performing the indicated antibiogram for each organism isolated. These professionals may also help physicians diagnose and control the spread of infections.Performs duties which may require both technical and professional judgment. Participates in and helps evaluate the Department's Quality Control, Quality Assurance, maintenance and safety programs. Maintains parts, reagents and supplies in areas assigned to the Microbiology Department. May be required to evaluate and write procedures for new methods, participate in teaching, continuing education, supervisory and other organizational activities. Performs other related duties with a minimum of supervision. May be required to work in other clinical areas of the laboratory.Key skills for a clinical microbiologist would include patience, decisiveness and meticulousness. Abilityto work quickly and accurately using logical and inquisitive thinking. A systematic approach to tasks with excellent IT skills, experimental and analytical skills and the ability to work as part of a team. Qualifications:
QUALIFICATIONS:Training should have included at least 12 months in a structured training program with clinical internship in a hospital setting or 2 years microbiology work experience.Must demonstrate commitment and adherence to STHS's Compliance Program and Code of Conduct through compliance with all policies and procedures, the Code of Conduct, attendance at required training and immediately reporting suspected compliance issue(s) to the Compliance Officer. EDUCATION / LICENSURE:Bachelor of Science in Microbiology, Medical Technology or related Clinical Laboratory Science.Registered Microbiologist or Medical Technologist - certified by national registry such as MT(ASCP), CLS(MLS), MT(AMT) is required within six months of hire.Medical Techs newly certified as of 2004, are required to participate in a Certification Maintenance Program to continue certification every 3 years. Failure to participate will invalidate certification after the initial 3 year certification period.
