Job DescriptionSalary: $103,659 - $132,253

Position Description:

The Environmental Program Director requires a mission-driven professional with grant development and management experience. As the department head, this individual will lead the organization's environmental program development and grant-seeking efforts and assist with strategic goals to ensure future funding stability that align with the Tribe's Mission and Goals. The candidate will be able to work independently while meeting deadlines and juggling multiple priorities in a results-oriented environment. They will have excellent written and oral communication skills and attention to detail. They will have a strong understanding of Tribal Government and Tribal Government funding sources and grant reporting. They will have experience/familiarity working with Alaska and Bering Sea environmental issues. This person supervises Managers, Coordinators, Interns and seasonal staff working in all programs within the Environmental Department including Fisheries, Education and Outreach, Recycling, Climate Resilience, and more. This person is supervised by the Director of Program Operations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain regular and respectful communication with coworkers, Tribal Council and Tribal members, and partner organizations.
  • Conduct work through the lens of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion on behalf of Qawalangin Tribal members.
  • Maintain existing and develop new partnerships and projects with Tribes, regional organizations, state and federal agencies, non-profit organizations, and university researchers.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain the policies and procedures for the Environmental Department.
  • Lead the writing and editing process for all grant proposals and reporting materials.
  • Chart a course to set, meet, and evaluate Qawalangin Tribe of Unalaska's environmental grant-seeking goals with the support and leadership of staff.
  • Provide administration for the grants process throughout all stages including proposal narrative and budget development, receipt of grants, assessment, tracking, and documenting.
  • Assure timely completion of all deliverables and commitments.
  • Craft and implement a robust, relationship and need-driven grant-seeking strategy and plan that gamers strategic renewed and new partnerships.
  • Translate internal project budgets and financial reports into external-facing budgets and reports to ensure potential funders understand organizational needs.
  • Collaborate with supervisees to ensure grants are spent and implemented as intended by the grantor and align with the organizational budget.
  • Guide and empower supervisees to successfully manage their programs.
  • Actively participate in the human capital employment cycle, including hiring, guiding, and firing the environment department's staff, with the assistance of the designated HR representative.
  • Plan and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrate initiative and coordinate across teams and programs seamlessly.
  • Approach new ideas with a sense of possibility.
  • Translate broad goals into achievable steps.
  • Adhere to the highest ethical standards in grants management and grant seeking.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:
  • Must be able to build and maintain positive relationships with Tribal, community and staff
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication
  • Must be sensitive to community cultural values.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a criminal background
  • Must have an Alaska Driver's license or be able to obtain one within 90 days of working for the
  • Must be able to work independently with little supervision.
  • Must have a master's degree in Environmental Sciences, or a related field. Minimum of 8 years relevant work experience may be substituted for college degree.
  • Minimum 2 years of grant writing and development experience.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office 365 programs, including Excel, Word, and SharePoint.
  • Experience with budgeting and budget development. Basic financial management skills
  • Team player with exceptional interpersonal skills. Ability to work well with diverse styles and personalities.
  • Self-starter, motivated, and able to take initiative in all situations; ability to function effectively in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, and inclusive environment.
  • Ability to organize and complete multiple tasks simultaneously with close attention to detail and prioritization to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Strong commitment to Tribal Government

Compensation:

This position is full-time, exempt, with a salary range of $103,659 to $132, 253. Benefits include health, dental, vision, short and long-term disabilities, life insurance; 2% employer contribution to an IRA; paid time off accrued at .10 per hour worked as outlined in the Policies and Procedures; Holidays as outlined in the Policies and Procedures.
