Job Description
The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County provides opportunities for people to connect with nature. We offer to the public 60 forest preserves, 145 miles of trails, 47 miles of rivers and streams, and 6 nature and cultural centers. We have 6 million visitors each year.

The District's mission is, "to acquire and hold lands containing forests, prairies, wetlands and associated plant communities or lands capable of being restored to such natural conditions for the purpose of protecting and preserving the flora, fauna and scenic beauty for the education, pleasure and recreation of it's citizens.

Job Purpose

This position is designed specifically for a veterinary technician student to fulfill their Spring externship requirement. The student will work under the direction of Willowbrook's Staff Veterinarian, Veterinary Technician, and Animal Care Team, providing professional medical services to help injured wildlife of DuPage County.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide routine and emergency care to a variety of species of wildlife (avian, mammal, reptile) and administer appropriate treatment
  • Assist with medical, diagnostic, and surgical procedures
  • Assist with euthanasia and postmortem examinations as needed
  • Complete medical and procedural records
  • Perform husbandry duties (cleaning, feeding, etc.)
  • Perform other duties as required

Education and Experience Required

Additional Information: Must be 18 years of age or older at time of hire.

Hours: March - May; 40 hours per week (includes weekends and holidays); up to 320 hours.

Pay: $13.00-14.00 an hour

Related Experience: Background or familiarity with wildlife rehabilitation philosophy is encouraged.

Special training or other license, certification etc.: Current enrollment with completion of the first year (1) of degree in Veterinary Technician Program (CVT) from an accredited institution. Must be in good standing with the appropriate Illinois professional veterinary licensure (if applicable). Must have a valid Driver's License; current on tetanus and rabies vaccinations.

Skills In: Observing, safe handling, restraining and transportation of birds, mammals, and reptiles (experience is encouraged but not required); professional and independent work; communication and teamwork.
