American University's Institute for Carbon Removal Law and Policy (ICRLP) invites applications for a Director of Research. This is a full-time, non-faculty position devoted to conducting and supervising research on the social, political, economic, legal, ethical, and/or governance aspects of carbon removal. The successful candidate will be expected to have their own well-advanced research agenda that will attract significant external funding. The position will also supervise other affiliate researchers, and be responsible for managing and coordinating some of the Institute's research-based outreach activities.
The Institute for Carbon Removal Law and Policy is dedicated to advancing sustainable carbon removal -- carbon removal that is good for the planet and at the same time good for people. Carbon removal is comprised of a diverse set of approaches to drawing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it for decades, centuries, or longer. Scientific assessments suggest that the drawing down of large amounts of atmospheric carbon dioxide will be needed to prevent the crossing of dangerous climate warming thresholds. Carbon removal is, in other words, going to be a necessary part of the world's climate change strategy. At the same time, not all forms of carbon removal are created equal. The Institute's work starts from the premise that exactly how carbon removal options are explored, developed, and deployed will matter a great deal for climate, social, broader environmental, and political impacts.
The Director of Center Research position is devoted to conducting and supervising research on the social, political, economic, legal, ethical, and/or governance aspects of carbon removal. The successful candidate will be expected to have their own well-advanced research agenda that will attract significant external funding.
