The Kozin laboratory in partnership with the Polley laboratory at Massachusetts Eye and Ear is looking to hire a research technologist for neurobiology research in mice. The candidate would lead new investigations into the brain's endogenous pathways and mechanisms for sensory plasticity. The research technologist would be an intergral member of a small team working on new approaches to leverage the brain's endogenous neuromodulatory systems as a new approach to sensory rehabilitation. The research technologist would perform pioneering research using a wide-range of modern in vivo neuroscience techniques such as 2-photon calcium and biosensor imaging, multi-channel neurophysiology, fiber-based imaging, optogenetics, operant behavior and quantitative videography assisted by machine learning. The research technologist will maintain critical laboratory equipment and train new laboratory members on their proper use. The research technologist will be responsible for data analysis, some figure preparation, and will be a co-author on resultant publications. Their work could lead to new treatment avenues for "sensory overload", a debilitating condition commonly found in traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder, sensorineural hearing loss, and normal aging. This is a longer staff position supported by a stable source of funding intended for someone looking to make a career in neuroscience laboratory research. It is not intentended as an interim research assistant position.
Records and graphically displays pertinent information obtained from research activities, through preparation of charts, illustrations, slides, statistical summary graphs, and narrative reports. Provides information that will typically be used as a basis for further investigation and/or for inclusion and co-authorship on resultant publication(s). Carries out cutting-edge laboratory experiments including small animal survival surgeries, in vivo imaging, in vivo neurophysiology, animal behavior, and advanced data analysis. Trains new graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and research assistants on the safe and effective use of advanced neuroscience lab equipment such as multi-photon imaging systems and opto/electrophysiology systems.Calibrates laboratory equipment and coordinates equipment servicing or replacement.
Requires a Ph.D in their field of specialty. 1 to 5 years experience preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong track record studying brain physiology and behavior with as many of the following techniques as possible: 2-photon imaging, electrophysiology, fiber imaging, optogenetics, operant behavior and quantitative videography assisted by machine learning. Strong candidates will have some experience writing custom scripts for data analysis in Matlab, Python, or a related programming environment.
Spends time between the wet laboratory, the animal housing facility, and an office adjacent to the laboratory, equipped with a personal computer for data entry and analysis.
Able to work with animals (rodents), lifting animal cages onto a cart, performing routine animal injections, assisting in animal surgery. Manipulates fine surgical instruments, perform routine animal injections, and perform animal survival surgery. Load cages onto a cart and transport them between the animal facility and the laboratory.
