Director/Senior Director of Advocacy

C2ES seeks an experienced legislative professional interested in a ground floor opportunity to lead the development and execution of our advocacy strategy. Reporting to the Vice President for Policy and Outreach, the successful candidate will have the chance to work with experts across the organization and leverage business engagement, analysis, and policy workstreams to build and support an effective lobbying strategy. Key areas of focus will include market-based approaches, critical-path technologies, and appropriations. This role could be filled at the director or senior director level.

Major responsibilities:
  • Lead the development and execution of organizational advocacy priorities and strategy, including both legislative and administratively focused priorities aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions across the U.S. economy;
  • Lead public facing efforts to mobilize companies, including C2ES's Business Environmental Leadership Council members, in support of ambitious climate policies, including with congressional offices and administration officials;
  • Plan and execute stakeholder engagement with Congress and the administration, including meetings, briefings and fly-ins;
  • Educate key stakeholders (including companies, policymakers, labor leaders, and other community leaders) about the concrete, economic opportunities in the net-zero transition;
  • Inform and contribute an advocacy focused perspective to technology-focused working groups and other C2ES policy products;
  • Represent C2ES in engagement with the administration, the U.S. Congress, and other external stakeholders;


Minimum Qualifications & Competencies:
  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in environmental policy, political science, energy/resources or related field, or equivalent experience;
  • At least 5-7 years of experience working in a federal legislative setting, with a strong interest and background in climate policy and business engagement;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Familiarity with the federal appropriations process
  • A collaborative, mission-focused mindset
  • A willingness to register as a lobbyist

Desired Qualifications & Competencies:
  • Independent, self-starter with a strong interest in growing with the organization;
  • A vision for the role that companies must play in supporting an ambitious legislative decarbonization strategy;
  • JD, Master's degree or relevant degree in environmental policy, political science, energy/resources or related field, or equivalent experience;
  • Experience working directly with large companies, and/or trade associations on climate and energy policy;
  • Established relationships on Capitol Hill;
  • Familiarity with the landscape of climate-focused NGOs and an awareness of C2ES's unique value proposition;
  • In-depth knowledge of legislative processes, including the federal appropriations process.

Other Requirements:
  • Must be willing to travel, as necessary;
  • Preference will be given to candidates that are based in the United States and have a right to work in the United States.
  • Preference to canditates located in DC Metro area.

Location: This position is based in Arlington, Virginia; near Washington DC.
