The English Department at Seattle University invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in the Literature and Culture of the Transatlantic Long 19th-Century with expertise in Race, Gender, Ecology, and Empire. Appointment begins September 2023.
The department is interested in candidates with a commitment to teaching, scholarship, and intellectual contributions including:
- A focus on how notions of empire and colonialism which began in the 18th century and took root in the 19th century have continued to play out in 20th and 21st century understandings of race, racism, imperialisms, and colonialisms
- A focus on interactions between notions of race and empire as related to the environment-attending to how environmental degradation and exploitation has been and continues to be related to the extractive logics of the transatlantic slave-trade, the displacement of indigenous cultures and peoples, and the operations of race and racism that continue to impact our current moment (as with issues of environmental racism)
- Teaching at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum which fosters intentional movement towards reparation, healing and transformative social action/change
- An interest in interdisciplinary, cross-disciplinary, intersectional, and co-curricular collaborations in teaching and scholarship
- An attention to the commitments of the college and the university to centering the margins, sustainability and climate change, racial injustice and widening economic inequity.

Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses, progressive and continuing scholarly and intellectual contributions, and service to the department, college and University.
Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. at time of appointment. ABDs will be considered. Evidence of teaching promise or excellence at the undergraduate level. A record of intellectual contributions representative of the position. The ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications: Preferred candidates will demonstrate an ability to develop students' capacity to engage with questions of social justice and social change centered on moving from theory to praxis.
